Obviously been talking Final Fantasy a lot lately, had me wondering what the board thinks. Give your standalone favorite, your top few, or your complete ranking. I'm going to go ranking as far back as I care.

FF 6 - #1 all time for me and the one I played through the most. Loved the world, story, characters.

FF 7 (PS) - Played this one through a few dozen times on multiple platforms.

FF 9 - This was probably my favorite world but the gameplay was a bit slow, characters were kind of weak (outside of Vivi and Steiner) and the story was a little more convoluted than I would have liked

FF Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift - I love this gameplay and the customization of your party. The story was just okay, but it was always enjoyable to play through.

FF 10 - Gameplay was actually pretty smooth and the setting was amazing. Characters were alright, I wasn't overly compelled by any of them but also didn't hate them. It took me probably a decade to fully understand the story.

FF 7 remake - This was peak combat for me and a lot of cool moments. Side quests dragged and there wasn't any real endgame content.

FF 8 - Magic system sucked, leveling concept sucked, but the story was fascinating and I liked the setting.

FF 14 - I'm early in this but I'm actually really enjoying this. Haven't committed near enough time to it, but I can tell I'll like it more than the rest below.

FF 13 - I had to restart this halfway through as I skipped too many cutscenes and had no clue what was going on. Once I did it was a bit more enjoyable and the story was actually fricking cool.

FF 15 - Incredibly plotline, but the pacing was abysmal. 90% bebopping around on sidequests then 10% sprinting through to the end game. I really liked the bromance aspect and the friendship between the fellas, and the villain was perfect but I had to do way too much reading to figure out any of his story. Plus the whole leaving out critical parts of the story until well after launch.

FF 12 - I somehow completely missed this game when it came out. It's on my playlist now.

FF 16 - TBD, work in progress.

FF 1-5 - Never played them. I did buy the bundle and might get around to them at some point.

FF 11 - I have no clue about this one.

8 is my favorite and the first I played as a kid. I understand it has its flaws but I thought the story was epic and it blew 9 year old me away. Never played the remaster because I didn’t want to ruin the memories I had as a kid

9 is probably my 2nd fave. Beat if for the first time about 4-5 years ago. It’s the most charming and has a lot of likeable characters and is paced perfectly. Under the light heartedness of it it does have deep themes of death. Only knock was that it was really easy, final boss was a joke

10 is probably 3rd. The first to be on ps2 was gorgeous and an epic story. The sphere grid was also a great leveling tool. Tidus was a somewhat weak main character but others made up for it. 10-2 was weird but was actually the first FF I ever actually beat. The dress system worked well

7 is next and I know I’ll get shite for this but I’ve always felt it’s the most overrated. I get it, it was the first 3D one and the first big one in the states. I think it’s a great game it just didn’t resonate with me like the above 3 did. I have yet to even play the remake

12 and 13 are whatever. 12 had a great battle system with shitty characters and a boring story. 13 was linear to a fault with a meh story. Never had the desire to play 13-2 and 13-3

Only played about 10-20 hours of 15. I enjoyed it well enough, need to eventually finish it

Beat 1 and 4 on my phone they’re both great games in their own right

Ashamed to say I haven’t played 6 or tactics, but 6 is on the ps store now so I plan on getting to it soon

X - my first and will probably always be my favorite. It's the only one I played as a kid

VIII - I really loved this one. The story was just completely fricking bonkers and had so much cool shite

VII - Didn't age as well as VIII, but still really fun. So much to do

XV - Played for 1 hour and then never turned it back on again.

VII Remake - Good but flawed game. Absolute dogshit pacing and pointless backtracking to pad playtime

XVI - 15 hours in, and it's amazing. In love so far

I own everything else from 1-10, looking forward to VI and IX the most since they're considered the "best"

Did you go all the way through and upgrade everyone to the max? I have always wanted to do this.

Gameplay-wise, FF7 Remake. Love the battle system. FF10 is a close second.

Character-wise, FF15 followed by 4.

Story-wise, a tie between 7 and 15.

Overall, it’s between 15 and 7 Remake.
I’ve yet to play 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13-2, 13-3, and 14. I have played 6 but never finished it. 3 is good until the final dungeon, which is fricking horrible.

1. 7 and 7R are my favs
2. 4 and 6 I lump together as I often play them back 2 back.
3. XII is so underrated. The voice acting is top notch and game play was fun. Lots to do in this game.
4. 10 - Tidus and Yuna forever
5. 9 - classic character styling and a great title

My least favs is 13 and the sequels. Just found them boring.

I wonder if this is the case for some or even most people.

I remember getting the playstation underground demo disks (as a kid I have no idea how I even signed up for them ). But, FF7 was my first one and I played the shite out of it. I bought the game as soon as i got the chance. Easily my favorite and even beat it more when I was bored in college around 2003 or 04 8 is second favorite.

I did this for the PS4 HD release, 100%'d the entire game. One of the most tedious things I've ever done

I played the first FF when it was new so that shaped my idea of what rpgs are supposed to be. FF9 is the perfect version of that. I like that medieval fantasy world and those type of characters, plus the turn based fighting system. That type of rpg doesn't seem to be made anymore though. FF12 is really good too, though I never beat the last boss.

I've played Mystic Quest, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

6 is tops in my book. Love that game. Would be my clear #1 RPG overall if Chrono Trigger didn't exist.

This'll be out of left field but I'd put MQ at #2. First RPG I ever played. It's basic as hell but the dungeons were great and the soundtrack is the heaviest out of any FF game on this list. Love those 16-bit guitar effects.

7 at #3. 10 at #4. Both are very good games.

4 at #5--fun, but the emotional punches didn't land for me. Seemed like a party member was making some huge sacrifice every hour only to come back later.

8 at #6--couldn't really get into this one and it's the only one I didn't finish. I played the shite out of Triple Triad in the dorms though.

I have beaten 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, and am at the last boss of 16.

Yes; I really need to finish 4 and 6, but I played 1 and 2 back to back and am a bit burnt out on pixel remaster

5 is really good. I've played through probably 90% of it but never finished it.

14 is probably one of my favorite Final Fantasy titles, but if I focus only on the single player games I'd probably rank as such:

9: Game is a bit linear compared to 7 and 8. The game has a world map, but large portions of the game lock you into only going from point a to b and it takes awhile before you get access to your full party. I do like that it's more lighthearted in comparison to the previous two games, and the story is much easier to follow.

10: I just really like this game. It's very colorful and fun to look at. The battle system, story, and music are fantastic. My only criticism is it's linearity.

12: The Zodiac Age remaster has the job system which adds a lot too the game. You can pretty much play it like an MMORPG with tank, healer, and DPS. My only criticism is that the main story is kinda bad. Supposedly the director left very early in development and it shows. It starts off well enough but soon turns into a slog.

Tactics - by far my favorite overall and I rank the job games pretty highly. I love that system. I love the characters, the ivalice setting, battle system and matsuno-led titles
7 - favorite story and characters. Also the first I played
6 - epic story and characters.
12 - again the job stuff/ivalice/matsuno. I know the original version didn’t have the job system in it but I played it that way. I tailored my group to be different jobs on the licensing board
7 remake - would like to go back and play again. I really don’t care about the changes that were made. I like that they expanded on things and changed it enough so it’s not exactly the same. Also loved the music remixes. Interested to see where it goes
14- still not in endwalker but started this last year and had a blast. Loved the story and the fact it was an mmo but the mmo grind like there was in 11 isn’t really all there
5 - I’d say this is the most underrated FF. Job system and snes era. Good not great story but it’s really fun to build party setups
8 - played this after 7 and tactics. Loved the world, characters, story and music. As others said I really am not a huge fan of the leveling and magic/gf system
10-2 - this one had a really fun battle system from what I remember. Seemed pretty gay with the girl band stuff at the time but I remember enjoying it a lot
9 - this one pulls the stuff people thought fondly of from all the previous games and references all of it. Great game. Just not my favorite and one I like to go back to
10 - like this one I just wasn’t as huge of a fan as everyone else seems to be
11 - I hate I rank this one so low. I loved it when I played it. Made a ton of friends on it and had a blast playing on the ps2 for years with the modem and hdd add ons. It’s just such a freaking grind to get any progress.
15 - I enjoyed playing it but the bad guy and bro trip is about all I remember. Nothing about the story really sticks out to me
13 - of the ones I’ve finished by far my least favorite. Not gonna get into much because I’ll just repeat what’s been said thousands of times

Ones I’ve played through a bit but never finished:
4 - I’ve made it halfway and not beaten. I’m sure this would rank pretty high because of what I’ve heard
2/1 - played both of these a bit, I just remember drastically different systems and pretty basic stories. Never could stick with them

Are two of the best RPGs and video games period. Simple yet engaging gameplay, great music from Nobu and such memorable characters.

Cecil/Kain/Rosa/Rydia/Edge will always be the GOAT party.

3 on snes is the only one I ever played start to finish. I played the first half of 7 and liked that as well on ps.

I think I'm going to have to put 4 on my "next up" list. I've played maybe 5-10 hours into it and I really enjoyed it, but I only own it on iPad and I cannot stand using a virtual joystick.

4 is getting a lot of love so far. I might bump this up in order as well.
