So like XBL Gold & XBL Silver then.

No, you can't quite make that comparison yet. If Silver allowed you play online at all, then I'd agree with you.

Also, none of the dev kits had 8GB of RAM in them. Everything they showed was using 4GB.

The official specs are in for the PlayStation 4 and what we have is, by and large, confirmation of existing DigitalFoundry stories - with one outstanding, exciting exception. At the PlayStation Meeting yesterday, Sony revealed that its new console ships with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, not the 4GB we previously reported. It was a pleasant surprise not just for us, but also for many game developers out there working on PS4 titles now and completely unaware of the upgrade - a final flourish to the design seemingly added in at the last moment to make PlayStation 4 the most technologically advanced games console of the next gaming era.

I think this is why the hardware wasn't shown, but it's not finalized yet.

I hope they have some PS4 demos playable at their next event. Destination Playstation will likely be focused on the last round of PS3 titles and new Vita announcements.

According to UltimateHog all of the dev kits had 8GB of DDR5 already.

Let's get off the Hog obsession for a second. Tell me what 8 GB of DDR5 RAM means.

Jeff is talking my language.

ETA: Will this make my environments more interactive? Will things be more detailed? Textures? Smoothness. Will Frostbite 2.0 run in 60 FPS?! When I drop a 120 mm mortar on a tent, will the tent just laugh at it like it does now?

taken from gizmodo comment

GDDR5 is strictly for graphic processing. DDR is for computational tasks and caching.

And for all of you saying that this isn't some big number because "my computer has 8 gigs of ram and it's so cheap"- no. Shut up. Stop talking. You are dumb. This is like comparing a toaster to your poor, hopeless soul.

The reason this number is significant is because high end GPU's for PC's have between about 2-4GB of GDDR5 RAM (My system has 3GB of GDDR5.

Nvidia will be releasing a new GPU called Titan soon (probably months and months before PS4) that has 6GB of GDDR5. This card is being called a "super computer GPU". Which is still 2GB less than the PS4. That is why that number is an industry leader.
