Holy shite. I was reading OCN and someone posted a link to this site:

Siliconlottery.com

It's selling binned 4790Ks for a small mark-up.

That is tempting. Can't afford it whatsoever because of Christmas expenses, but still.

They've been around for a while (I guess they just sell the mainstream i7 du jour). How am I just finding out about this?

Yes, I am an idiot who would pay an extra $100 for a guaranteed 5.1GHz i7.

Their binned CPUs only require two voltage changes (helps with the guarantee I guess), which means that with the right motherboard I could probably do some tweaks and get a 5.1GHz chip even higher.

Do any of you guys have experience ordering from moddiy.com, specifically custom sleeved cables? I emailed them for a quote on a full set of cables for a Rosewill Photon 1200 I'm using in my new Z97 build, and got a reply 2 days later. I was a bit surprised as the Photon is a new line (although apparently it's a rebranded HighPower Astro), there aren't even any reviews on it yet. It was a good price so I'd like to go ahead and order them as it's the last thing I need to start the build. It seemed like a generic, premade reply in somewhat odd English. They stated "when you are ready to go ahead with the order send us your name, phone number and address." No mention of payment method. Just curious if anyone knows if they are legit and how good their quality is.

That website has some terrible review scores. Mostly about shipping, not the product itself.

Yea in my reply to them I asked for an estimated time on turnaround but I'm assuming I'll be waiting til at least Monday to hear back. If anyone else has suggestions on a good place to order custom cables I'm all ears. I'm already over a sad amount of money into this thing so I have a want to go ahead and get a nice set of quality cables for it. (Pathetic attempt at a pun, as it's a full LSU themed build)

I'm guessing the sleeves are going to be purple and/or gold. Otherwise, I'd suggest the lazy route of ordering cable extensions with individual sleeving.

I have no experience with moddiy, but I'd be put off by slow responses and bad reviews on service. I would just sleeve them myself. It's tedious as hell but would probably cost a lot less than asking a company to do it with custom colors.

EDIT: other option. Order white extensions (the silverstones specifically) and dye them.

They will be purple and white, accenting the gold elsewhere. What type of dye would you use and how well would that last? The set (24 pin, two 8 pin 12V, and 4x PCI-E) would be $122, which I would be willing to spend to keep from doing that shite myself. I am actually doing 2 builds at once including disassembling GPUs for paint on top of painting a good bit of other shite, so the more work I can save myself the better, especially on something I've never done. I did look at the white Silverstone extensions at first, which I might still do if I decide not to give these guys a shot, but I'd likely just leave them all white (going in a white Enthoo Luxe). Thanks for the info guys.

I would be scared to death to paint my GPU's.

I don't really foresee any issues, putting two Vapor-X 290s in and it doesn't look too bad as far as tearing them down. Gonna do the blue parts metallic purple and the black plastic in satin white. I'd like to take them apart anyway as during my search for other painted Vapor-X's (found none) I found a guy with one who took his apart to replace the TIM and he found that the thermal pads on the VRMs still had the peel away plastic sheets...I didn't like the sound of that lol.

I don't know how long it would last, but the first dye I would try it is Rit Dye which is usually in the laundry detergent aisle. I have no experience dying sleeving, but the silverstone sleeving is fabric-like that it seems like it would work well.

I have used rit dye to straight up dye cables in 2012 for an older build to improve the aesthetics:

Here are the pics from the dye portion of the mod job I did last year (part of the mod was also dremeling the case and adding a second gpu and another radiator).

The water has to be really hot for the rit dye to be most effective, so I went to the dollar store in search of marbles to line the bottom of the pot (preventing the cables from touching the bottom and getting too hot/melting). Found these decorative gems instead, which did the job just fine.

They needed to sit overnight in the pot with the heat off, and that allowed the dye to fully penetrate. I did the same with the other cables.

PSU balancing act, courtesy of pop tarts. It looks way more unstable than it actually was.

Drying out.

Put my durelene tubing in the dye as well.

Then painted orange PSU.

I know most people open the PSU and desolder the connections in order to paint the metal safely, but I decided I could be careful enough with the taping method since I didn't have to paint everything (such as the fan grill).

Rustoleum primer and high heat black paint, 2000 grit sanding, then polishing compound. Came out ok I think.

After all was said and done....

Brucevilanch (RIP) painted his Dual-X 7950s. While looking for my old post with those dye job pics I posted above, I found his paint job pics as well:

Damn that came out well. I wanted to do alternating purple/white so it sounds like it would be nigh impossible to do that for what I'm going for. I guess I'm gonna wait on a reply from "Carrie Ma" on the turnaround time and just go with the solid white extensions, depending. The PSU came with those damn flat cables for PCI-E & 12V so sleeving those myself without running all new wires isn't really an option either. Worst comes to worst the solid white will still look nice in there (in my mind at least lol)

Yeah you are way over my head/desire with that stuff. I just want a rig that runs well, don't care what it looks like.

I've only really started to care about the looks in recent years. It wasn't as easy to go with specific themes or styles for a build. Motherboard color schemes were gaudy, PSU cable sleeving just as colorful as bare wires, lots of cases with boring gray steel interiors, and NVIDIA cards were green and ATI/AMD cards were red. Custom loops were made up of aquarium parts, car heater cores, and plain copper blocks. Case modding was big back then, as were the really ugly look-at-me-im-a-gamer style cases. I kind of resigned myself to functionality over looks for a while. Nowadays you can color coordinate all of your components, and PC aesthetics is practically its own small industry.

yeah, don't do anything to Sapphire cards, unless you have money to pull the ol' switcharoo with amazon or newegg.
