Would it be worth it for me to jump from my i5 2400 to the i7 2600? What kind of FPS jump would I see?

I want to make the jump, but I'd be too lazy to tear apart that tiny little build.

All depends on what you're playing; you know most games just want a few fast cores, and others lately are using even more. Best thing to do is check i5 vs. i7 benches for various games. Every game always has at least a youtuber or benchmark site doing a comparison.

That's not bad. Same as my old gaming laptop with the 17" 1600x900 TN panel and Radeon HD 5870M. You only start to notice the weight when it becomes too obsolete to be a gaming PC but you're still lugging it around as a work laptop.

That desktop 1080 will last a good while at 1080p at least?

Yep, that's the great thing about big leaps in heat/power efficiency. Now I haven't looked too much into the final shipping specs of the laptop 1080s, but I imagine there are still some thermal/power constraints that will keep them slightly underclocked (or very much "stock" with no wiggle room compared to desktop AIBs' specs), but still...Not too long ago, you'd be lucky if the very best laptop GPU of any given moment was on par with a lower mid-range desktop card.

Should I?

Like I said, I want one for my office and $2K isn't bad but Last Action Hero isn't my first choice. There is a South Park machine for $4K in Mobile, AL.

I would wait and find the machine you want. With an investment like that, get something you really want instead of finding the first thing that pops up

TFW you almost finish building a PC and you forget you don't have an extra SATA cable

And it's right at the time best buy is closed, which is the only place that sells them

Been there, done that. Had a Toshiba Qosmio with an 18.5" screen and GTX360M in it that I bought back in early 2011 that weighs more than this new laptop does. It finally shite the bed on me earlier this year. It ended up only being used on MMO's and work for the last several years.

About a 10% difference in the laptop and desktop versions. The laptop 1080 and 1060 are identical to their desktop counterparts other than base clock. If the laptop cooling can handle it, the laptop cards are beating the desktop cards in some scenarios, especially the 1070. The laptop 1070 card has more cuda cores than the desktop although it is clocked slower, but can beat the desktop version easily if able to overclock it in the laptop.

That's actually quite surprising.

There's no way the boost clocks will be as consistent as their desktop counter parts but still impressive if that slide is true.

So weird that the laptop 1070 has more cores. But yeah, in response to hoojy, this is just one of those things that will be in large part dependent on design. Kind of like the core M CPUs in 2-in-one PCs... in theory, a core M can boost to perform like an i5, and do so all day long at the right temps, but of course they're meant for passively cooled devices, so the length of time they can boost can be drastically affected by either a great or remarkably shitty passive-cooling solution.

Not quite as drastic of a difference for the Nvidia GPUs, but I imagine you'll get a little more oomph from your 1080 if it's in a 9+-lb highly-ventilated, fan-happy tank of laptop vs. a more traditional footprint, 15", etc. But probably still within that 5-10% margin.

Off Topic: Seeing how the rebuild process is going for some of my friends and neighbors who flooded, I am in some ways kind of glad I wasn't insured. People dealing with slow contractors, ins. adjusters, mortgage company, etc... My in-laws' contractor just now got the drywall hung today, and will likely take another week+ to get the next crew in there. Meanwhile, me and my dad have 90% of my sheetrock hung, floated, and painted, 90% of the baseboards and door molding installed, and we've been able to make pretty worthwhile upgrades to my house for relatively little cost using that FEMA "emergency" money.

It's been a bitch for sure -- working a few hours a day for the last 2 months -- but we are still further along than a lot of people dealing with the red tape, people who flooded less than a foot like we did.

Question: My computer has two hard drives but doesn't recognize the second one. It's been formatted and partitioned and will show up on the boot menu, but nowhere else. I can't save anything to it. There's nothing on it but the computer won't boot without it. Wtf is going on?

First try this:

In Windows go to File Explorer options in Control Panel
Under view for Hidden files and folders, click on 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
Check to see if drive shows now in This PC

Since the drive is empty Windows may have hidden it.

IF the above doesn't work, try this:

Go to disk management
See if the drive you are having problems with shows the Disk # and says Unknown under the disk #
If it shows Unknown, the disk needs to be initialized.
Right click over where the disk # is and click Initialize Disk
Then reformat
For partition style always choose GPT if disk is over 2TB. For under 2TB you can choose either, but I always choose GPT in Windows 10. Choose MBR if you think you may ever need to connect the drive to an older PC.
Then reformat drive as simple volume and make sure it is assigned a drive letter.
After formatting, it should now show under This PC to use as storage.

Went ahead on ordered a fury nitro for the time being as a stop gap. Temps are reaching 90+ now and I'm too lazy to clean it.

Last benchies are showing it 15-25 percent faster than my 290x. Not a great upgrade but the temps and noise will be much better, so it's worth it.

Paid 30 bucks so I can have it tomorrow. I'm such an impatient dumbass.
