Na. I don't hate it. Now that I'm doing it for the 3rd time I know where to go and only 1 shard was a pain to get to. It isn't that big compared to other areas. The pain is in the tunnels and corridors which can be a tad confusing.
If you do it before picking a side, it is really too easy because the roving mobs don't appear. So the place is almost empty except for spiders and hyenas.

I cleared the Carta base and opened the vault. Everything in it sucked though. Am I missing something?

If you opened the vault then you likely got everything in that area. I remember the gear in the vault being really nice at that point though. But maybe I just went there at an earlier point than you?

I'm level 20 at the moment and the gear I'm finding in general is underwhelming. Feels like I haven't changed armor or weapons since level 14 or so. Once I crafted heavy armor for my mage, nothing is worth picking up. I've been searching for a new staff schematic and can't find shite.

You get the best staff schematics very early in the game. There are 2 that are pretty interchangeable. Both Masterwork 4 slots. Only difference is one has a second metal slot and 1 has a second leather slot.

Seems like the bosses have the better weapons and armor and Astrariums.
Once you get schematics, craftable items are the best.
Heck, on hard, I've just finished Hinterlands, Storm Coast and Oasis, and all of my items are crafted. It just take more time picking everything up and killing everything.
The worst part of crafting is that there aren't enough materials for Runes. If you keep upgrading through crafting, you might run out of runes.

Deciding what kind of rune to put on a weapon is the toughest decision to make. I'm also afraid to use masterwork items and then find a better schematic that I wished I saved it for. It never happens though. I'll finish the game without ever using my best crafting items.

Hissing Waste Merchant and Emprise Keep Merchant have the top dog schematics. You find some of the master schematics.
I've been buying all of them from merchants as areas open up and I get enough money.

What really stinks is the best armor can only be used by a warrior dwarf.

It doesn't have to be fade touched. As long as silver it'd is the main component class restrictions are removed
