I have been thinking about getting into board games as a way to spend a few hours in a social setting.

What are some fun and cool board games I should start picking up?

Btw while it's not a board game we did just pick up exploding kittens for the family. It's awesome! I highly recommend it for families.

On the easy end, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, and Pandemic (co-op board game). Those are the three staples with Dominion, 7 Wonders, and Stone Age or Lords of Waterdeep as a slight step up. Also Flash Point: Fire Rescue.

However, with this I would suggest something like One Night Ultimate Werewolf or Resistance, the recent release Codenames, as well as something like Wits and Wagers, Coup, etc.

Solid little filler game, so you are on the right track. There is a whole new batch of board games that are completely different from the old stuff.

own pandemic. cooperative games are nice to break up the monotony, but i live with someone who doesnt love board gaming, especially if theres no competition. consider who you will be playing with. if they are open minded and can get into the coop thing its a great game.

Pandemic is pretty great, particularly with the expansion On the Brink. I have not played Legacy, but it looks awesome and the reaction and reviews have been extremely positive.

I did the voiceover for a series of Kickstarter campaign videos from Cool Mini or Not for a game called Arcadia Quest. Based on the popularity of the KS, folks looove this game. They also dig the miniatures. They just released the Inferno, Dragon and Pets expansions.

Is Arcadia Quest a role-playing game?

I'm not that into role-playing games.

Think skirmish game, something like the old Jagged Alliance or the fighting portions of X-COM.

Not my cup of tea personally, at least not AQ.

I'll second "Ticket to Ride". It's a nice mix of chance and strategy and dead simple to teach.

"Wits and Wagers" is fun too if you want a trivia game that centers more on placing bets on who knows what than on actually knowing loads of random factoids.

And if you want a nice dice game, "King of Tokyo" is fun. Each player is a Godzilla-esque monster fighting to do the most damage to the city and the other monsters.

I don't think it's a long term RPG like D&D. The campaigns just last for the session, if I understand it correctly.

It's a tile-based game for the maps, etc.

Here's the link to the Inferno expansion. The video explains it better than I can. (Which is ironic, since I'm doing the explaining).

If you want to see how loyal your friends REALLY are, bust this game out...

Nothing will make you lose friends or disown your family more quickly than this game.

I'll second (or third) Sequence, Ticket to Ride, and Pandemic.

And add in my own suggestions: Munchkin, Smallworld, and Smash-Up.

Twilight Struggle. It's ranked #1 for a reason.
