I definitely disagree. The end of TLOU is fantastic. Really nothing of consequence happens at the end of uncharted.

I loved that sequence with *SPOILERS* Nate and Elena's kid and the way you could move around the house looking at all the photos of their family that lead up to that point in time.

The Last of Us' ending felt cheap to me, and it ended too abruptly. It doesn't have to be "emotionally satisfying," but I was expecting a bit more exposition than what I got.

1. Final Fantasy 6 - It really comes down to the cast of characters involved. Every single one with their own unique story. The overall progress and "win" by the bad guys part way through. The enormity of the situation was never really apparent until it happened. Great story. Great twist. And the best Epilogue in all of gaming.

2. Half-Life 1-2 - The best of single player experience in an FPS ever and an extremely awesome story. It's a visual movie from the first second.

3. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - This is probably less a focus on direct writing and more a focus on narrative as an experience.

4. Metroid Prime - The in game text and story, while quite compact compared to other more open epics, is super effective. Loved reading every single but and piece of content.

5. Mass Effect - Slightly better than KOTOR. Mass Effect stands as Bioware's pinnacle.

Honorable Mentions - Fallout 1 - Has the best story of any Fallout game. And best delivery., KOTOR 1/2, Final Fantasy IV

Portal 1 & 2 has some of the best, genuinely funny writing I've seen in a video game. Also, both have fantastic ending sequences. I couldn't stop playing either one of them once I started.

ETA: The Stanley Parable is also a game "story" I think everyone should experience, though it's certainly not traditional. Really clever writing.

TLOU - I was around the same age as Joel, raising my daughter on my own and she was 12 (Sarah and Ellie were 11 & 14). Easily sunk myself in Joel's shoes. Characters were fantastic.

MGS - Writing was cheesy, but first game I ever played that did a great job tying themes into a narrative. Contrasts of whether one controls one's fate or is a slave to it were well done.

Walking Dead Season 1 - Again cheesy stuff, but man that last episode

Had TLOU been available for Xbox I know that I would have loved it.

I hate when games are exclusive.

Knew I'd forget one somewhere. SH2 was excellent. Would have loved to see how Silent Hills would have turned out.

Kingdom Hearts - Story is definitely out there and spread across games that aren't even all on the same system - as of yet - but every time I play them I can't put them down.

TLOU - I didn't play it personally, I tried, but hit a gamebreaking bug early on, but I did a watch though on Youtube and the story is great. People aren't overhyping it in any way.

The Witcher 3 - Game is incredible and the story IMO is tip top as well. I have like 200+ hours logged into the game and the base game itself was excellent (Bloody Baron quest and Hym monster bounties are up there as some of the best I can remember playing)

Then the DLC comes out and it's just as good, if not better than the base game in it's storytelling.

Red Dead Redemption - Saw this mentioned and wholeheartedly agree.

SPOILERS FOR RED READ

The mission at the end you play as Jack where you can kill the head guy, his brother and his wife if you want was perfect. Taking his wife and hog tying her onto the railroad tracks was one of the more satisfying moments I've had in a game regarding revenge.

The Witcher 3 is another great story.

Depending on how you play the Bloody Baron mission, the ending for that can be brutal. The side quest involving a hunter and his sister-in-law looking for his missing wife is also great. The scene when Geralt finds Ciri on the island had the feels.

I really need to go back and play Red Dead Redemption. I remember it was really good, but only played through it once and admittedly don't remember a lot of it.

Lunar the Silver Star on Sega CD. It got me for some reason.

I had a friend spend the night one night and I picked it up and started playing it, he fell asleep. He wakes up the next morning and I'm still sitting there playing it. Not many games have sucked me in quite like that.

Just played through the one on Dragon Quest VIII, and it's up there as well. It's like a whole other game, after you have beaten it initially.
