I remember God of War on ps2 having great levels, and Dark souls is certainly top tier. What say the gaming board?

Bloodborne which is not surprising because of From's track record.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 have some of the best level design I've ever seen. Also, Metroid Prime is pretty great.

Skyrims world design was one of the best I've ever seen. Bioshock is up there too.

+ Super Mario Bros. 3.

I'd also add:

Rayman - Take Your Pick
Mega Man 2 and X
Super Mario 64
Earthworm Jim
Team Fortress 2
Quake
Super Metroid
Castlevania - Take Your Pick
Viewtiful Joe
MGS 2

If this were a list it would be comprised of 10 Mario games.

Skyrim?

Good?

:rotfl:

Pretty much all of the Zelda games are top notch. Bloodborne recently.

I think we need to clarify what the OP meant. When I hear "level design," I'm thinking of how the level plays, not looks. Enemy placement and how the player interacts with the environment are key.

This isn't art direction or visuals.

To me, many open world games suffer in this regard, including Witcher 3. Fighting hordes of bandits was repetitive and a chore.

Skyrim has some of the worst level design I've ever seen.

Even if this is what OP meant, God of War sucked dick.

I'm just not into button mashing though so feel free to throw my opinion out the window

ETA: Regarding the Witcher and its bandits, I mean would you have rather them had just one group of bandits in the game? I find it perfectly believable that bandits are just posted in random locations than just none at all.
