To be fair risk isnt a bad board game. It's just that there are modern board games that do what risk does a whole lot better.

Playing 4 hours then losing on the roll of dice, ugh.

I appreciate your frustration. I don't care for heavy dice rolling board games in general. I don't find king of Tokyo to be fun for that reason.

Risk is sort of where you get started down the long road of strategy games. It makes you think there's a lot of strategy involved but in the end it's 95% luck, between drawing countries at the start of a game , cards at the end of a turn and dice rolls. Don't get me wrong I spent many hours playing risk as a kid, but eventually you want something deeper.

KoT is alright for me. Even at 6 players it's at worst 45 mins. And it isn't a strategy. It's just a light Yahtzee game. I do find King of New York has better tactical options, but it isn't trying to be more than rolling some die and laughing with friends. Nothing wrong with that. But yeah it isn't for everyone. I just don't expect to outwit or out-strategize opponents in KOT, you kind of do in Risk.

Will say Risk is alright for that early intro, but there are so many better games that give the same feel. Or used to be a good intro.

My high school buddies and I always play Risk Legacy when everyone comes back for the holidays.

It's risk with additional features that allow for more strategy. More of a futuristic setting as well.

A couple I didn't see mentioned are Alhambra and Castles of Burgundy.

Codenames is a great game for small or larger groups.

Had a few too many drinks at an after party for a conference I was at. Apparently I ordered Betrayal at House on the Hill and Dead of Winter from Amazon last night. So I got that going for me, which is nice. I need to delete my Amazon app when I've been drinking. I impulse buy way too much in an inebriated state.

I'll admit, I have a bit of a problem. Last time I counted I had something approaching 100 board games. My wife hates them, and I almost never find anyone to play them with, but damn, do I love them.

Board Games are a tough hobby precisely because you rely on other people to join in. Some people that will like board games, would usually just rather play a video game instead. Others whoa re stuck on Monopoly and Risk, take convincing, but CAN be actually really excited with the right kind of games.

Finding those games are tough however.

Quite a few games can be played solo. Especially the Co-op games.
