The only place iv'e seen them is in Gulf Shore/Orange Beach. Had them for the first time and they are very good. A little pricey but very good. Sweet and excellent with just butter. You would think it would catch on other places along the Gulf.

Peche has them on the menu at times. We don't have a lot of deepwater shrimpers in La because there's too much here closer in. That's my guess as to why you don't see them in markets here typically.

Its a different taste though. I wouldn't really compare it to regular shrimp from what i have tasted.

I love Phils's. Great, sloppy roast beef. Even with the sesame seed bread.

Maybe I had a bad batch in Florida, but I wasn't blown away.

They are good but not show stopper good. Those people in Lower AL think they are gold?

better question, why do you have to know a shrimper to get soft shell shrimp?

I LOVE soft shell shrimp but hard to get.
I have to barter with a shrimper to get them.

I read somewhere that that many shrimpers keep the soft shells for themselves and family/friends.

ETA: The odds are that I read that here.

They are caught toward Alabama and Florida and bought from the boats in that area. We don't catch them in Louisiana although markets and restaurants can still buy them from seafood distributors in Alabama as they deliver here weekly. I used to buy them when I had my seafood market in Baton Rouge so places here can get them.

Louisiana is king of white shrimp and also inshore brownies so that's what you usually see here.

I think restaurants on the MS coast have an aversion to white and brown shrimp. The only thing they boil are royal reds.

That are generally poorly done I may add
