Try Lagavulin not as medicinal as Laphroag, Laphroag is going to be the most medicinal of all the Islay whiskies. Another thing is that when drinking Scotch you always drink Islay whiskies last in a session. They can leave overpowering smoke taste that will effect the taste of your next pour.

I've heard that Lagavulin and Talisker are less medicinal. I really don't mind peat or salt, it's just that iodine.

Islay scotches need age. Way more than Highlands. Laph 18 or Lag 16 are delicious where laph 10/quarter casks are terrible.
Honestly, I am not a huge fan of the Islays, but with some age they get much better.
Talisker is delicous. Taliskers 18 is one of the best scotches. Definitely for the money. Technically not a Islay, but similar qualities but less aggressive.
Good Luck,

A guy named Will Larue runs the spreadsheet on Google Docs. Just search for Blanton's bottle date on one of the Facebook secondary pages.
It works too.
I got my wedding date bottle within a month or so of posting the date from a guy in Mississippi.

Good deal. I am hoping to get lucky and get a 3/31/2017 bottle for my Granddaughters birth date.

The longer the whisky is in the barrel the effect of the peat goes down as a rule.

The Caol Ila scotches are also a great Islay, if you're exploring. I'm not huge on Islays but will have a Lag 16 every now and then. The Tallisker 18 is even better, but overpriced IMO.
I picked up a Caol Ila Distiller's Edition (Moscatel wine cask finished)in Scotland last month and it's delicious--probably one of my favorite Islays.
If you can find a Lagavulin Distiller's Edition (sherry cask finished) that is also a great one to try.
