What's a good grill for a beginner?

Someone who can cook, but has never grilled before. Big green egg? Gas? Charcoal? Your suggestions are much appreciated!

Get a weber. I can do everything on mine and I'm $1000 richer than my friends with a green egg, except trout bandit, who was given one.

If you are just starting, get a good gas grill. The Weber spirit grills are under $500.

This and it will last almost forever.

I like my green egg. I prefer kamado cookers over simple kettles. If you are just grilling though, there is no need for a kamado. If you want to do low and slow look into them.

Another vote for this.
It is extremely versatile. You will learn how to control the temperature with the top and bottom vents. Once you do, it's about as easy to control as the oven in your kitchen.

Yep spend 100-200 bucks and get a Weber charcoal grill and you'll learn solid grilling practices and can get into smoking butts and the like.

You're still at least $1000 richer Motorboat. OP get a Weber kettle charcoal for $150 or a bottom line Weber gas will run you around $300-400. You can't go wrong with either but nothing beats an egg. Especially free ones.

Get a weber kettle and go from there

Another vote for a Weber Kettle. Spend your money on a good dual probe thermometer.

I would go for a Weber gas. If you've never grilled before, gas is the easiest to work with.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I'm surprised to see so any recs for charcoal over gas. Would it make any difference if the beginner grilled is a female? I love to cook but have never been behind a grill. I have always wanted to learn so I think I'm about to have Santa Claus bring me a grill. I'm passionate about learning new things but I don't want to be in over my head.

Food grilled over coals tastes better. I would not change my recommendations for a lady griller. It all depends on what you want to do:
If you just want to quickly grill some meat during the week, a gas grill is the most convenient. Webers are great and I really like Coyote grills for an outdoor kitchen setup. (There are also good cheaper options)
If you are trying to get more flavor grilling chicken, steaks...etc. with the ability to do some BBQ and don't mind a little extra time lighting a fire, then get a charcoal kettle (Weber is the classic).
If you want to really get into BBQ and grilling with easy high temp searing and don't mind spending a bit more, I would get a kamado cooker (green egg or primo for me).

Another vote for a Weber Kettle. It's what I started on and still use. Does everything I need it to. Low and slow to high heat.
