i'm looking at getting one and not sure what kind i want. the offset-box smokers look a little cumbersome and appear to have a steep learning curve. the cabinet style look appealing because they seem to be the easiest to manage.

just interested in what others think. i consider myself good at grilling, but i do not have any smoking experience.

i was looking at the backwoods chubby which runs a little over $900.

any other suggestions are much appreciated!!

2 big green eggs (medium and large) and a weber smokey mountain. I did a lot of research, and given many years with all 3, for the money, go WSM, especially now that they offer a larger size with a thermometer. I love my eggs, but I feel real good when I put those briskets and butts on the WSM at 8pm that at 8am the temp will still be 250.

looks like a great smoker.

Insulated. Nice air control.

I dont know that it could hold a temp longer than about 6-8 hours with that little fuel. It is just according to what you want out of one. I wanted a smoker that would hold up to 40 lbs of fuel, so I could do clods or other huge pieces of meat without having to refire or refuel.

But that looks like a great cooker at a really decent price.

The WSM is a great cooker. Probably been more smoking done on one of them than any other piece. Hell, I just got mine to have something to play around with and talk about.

I must admit, the Backwoods competitor is alot like mine, mine has more room for the fire box. I really like that feature.

WSM.
Doesn't get easier.

I have a friend who does competition cooking.
He cooks for the public on a huge, expensive off-set smoker rig.
But, the meat for the judges is done on a WSM.

Count me with the eggers...Big and Mini. Bought it because I wanted to do more than smoke. Did two racks of ribs yesterday; stabilized it at 250, put the ribs on, and it cruised for 4 hours.

I'd avoid smokers that use pelletized smoking woods. God only knows what's in that stuff. I like to use recognizable chips & chunks.

Offsets are nice if you want to burn logs and need a lot of space for huge functions, but they require a ton of baby-sitting to make sure the temp is correct. The WSM is great for most people that only cook for a few people since they are pretty much set it and forget it. I can get up to 16 hour burns at 250 degrees with little to no baby-sitting on my WSM.

I have a WSM. For a good, cheaper smoker, I recommend a Brinkmann Gourmet Charcoal.
