Not talking the big brands like jack links. I mean the real shite. Really tough and tasty beef jerky.

I've not had all of the beef jerky in the country, so I couldn't tell you. I like the jerky at Bergeron's very much.

Anyone know of a good jerky that's relatively inexpensive?

The kind that I cut into strips, marinate for 24 hours and then dehydrate?

Yeah I love homemade. Unfortunately I don't have a dehydrator anymore. Used to love making it at home.

#1 Woody's Smokehouse - Centerville, TX

As the town's name implies, it sits halfway between Dallas and Houston with locations on each side of the freeway. Their smoked elk jerky will change your life, but it's not exactly cheap given we don't exactly have an excess elk population around here to eat. Last year it was $44/pound and this year is $69/pound.

#2 Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse - El Campo, TX

This gem is about 75 miles southwest of Houston and has become a must-stop location anytime I'm driving down that way. They have a specialty meats section that could make a grown man cry. Aside from the massive food selection, they have alls sorts of cool shite to look at like legit smokers, grills, deer stands....not the novel bullshite you see at Bucc-ee's. They offer lots of options for processing deer, hog, etc. for those that would rather pay for that.

I haven't had the chance to sample every beef jerky in the country. However, Bourgeois meat market in Thibodaux is damn good

Costco beef jerky is really damn good...and, of course, cheap.

Like GG I can't say that I've sampled extensively across the entire nation - but there are a few standouts that I enjoy.

The regular jerky from the House of Jerky. It's a small national chain that ships but I usually pick some up when I'm out in Pennsylvania. They ship.

In NYC there is the "Jerky Triangle" in Chinatown - Ling Kee, Malaysian Beef Jerky, Ping's Dried Beef and New Beef Corp all within about a 10 minute walk of each other. I've not done a side by side taste off but I tend to gravitate to the square style (vs sliced style) spicy beef variety at Malaysian Beef. Whenever I bring some to a poker night it is the first thing to disappear. It's not bark-like so if you enjoy gnawing endlessly at your snack the style may not be for you. Almost all these spots run about $20 a pound, most are cash only. Serious Eats did a write up a while back - here's a link.

Looks like Malaysia Beef Jerky now ships...

Another friend brings along African biltong style beef jerky from a place in the West Village called Jonty Jacobs. I can't recall the exact variety he picks up but it is another short lived hit when the cards are being thrown. Just checked - they ship.

I'm curious to see what else comes up. Is there anything local worth trying?

They've been in business for over 40 years. You must really eat healthy and exercise regularly.

No and yes. But living 2000 miles to the west keeps me out of reach of the delicious jerky.
