I've been eating the hell out of these Oregon Star tomatoes. They are meaty and have a relatively low acid content. Delicious, even if they do have an irregular shape.

What are your favorite types of tomatoes? Do you use different types for different things?

Carolina gold (hard to get large fruit, low yield)

Sun Gold cherry (easy to grow and production is high)

Heirloom purple (hard to grow but taste is off the charts)

I grow a lot of Cherokee purples and an old Gulf States tomato. Both have great flavor. If you can find a Louisiana Pink grow them hard to find but a ripe one cut open will make your whole house smell like a fresh tomato.

Better Boy is my favorite... grew up eating them (my Dad and I would walk out to the garden with a salt shaker and eat them like apples). Cherokee Purple and Paul Robeson are also regulars in the garden.

Brandywine. Not crazy productive, but great flavor. But I like pretty much every tomato that's grown in dirt and cow manure in someone's garden. Give me a loaf of white bread, a jar of mayo, S&P and some homegrown tomatoes, and I'm happier than a pig in slop.

Most people don't realize the most creole tomatoes are in fact not creole tomato. What you buy at the store called creole is actually probably a celebrity tomato.

This is true. There was never a true variety of creole tomato. It was a common name given to Louisiana grown beefsteak tomatoes.

There's now a modern "creole" developed to try to emulate the charateristics of the old "creoles".

Celebrity is a good tomato though. It always performs well in taste test trials and produces a ton of tomatoes for a determinate.

I prefer the brandywines due to texture and taste. The crop I had this year rivaled the production of my celebrities.
