He is such an awkward guy, but I would agree that the food is definitely not the focus at the Cactus. LINK

The food sucks and the drinks are not good enough to endure the pretentious pricks of Lakeview. That would be my review.

that was funny. Looks like one of the whiny managers decided to comment underneath the article.

Not sure any "food critic" eats in more less than appealing restaurants. He goes to Europe and eats on cruise ships. When was the last time he has gone to a Coquette? Or La Petite? Or Meauxbar? Or anywhere that gets discussed with any regularity on this board. I feel sorry for him in a lot ways.

His tropes are so tired. /end rant.

I heard him the other day talking about Meauxbar.

But in this context he's right. VC is godawful.

I've only been there once, and admittedly, I had a decent Tex Mex-ish meal.

He is being somewhat hypocritical. He criticizes VC for giving him unwanted special treatment, but his dining diary or whatever it's called is full of subtle brags about being feted at the city's more esteemed restaurants by the chef, owner, manager, whoever.

Welcome to 2012 with this review Tom.

Somehow I picture him in a coat and tie sitting on the patio sweating his arse off trying to eat the horrible food.

They spent millions to build what looks like a border town shanty on Old Hammond Highway.

Does it stay as packed as the Lakeview location?

What's funny (sad?) is, the building was once the prettiest classiest restaurant BR has ever had, and those folks probably didn't spend a fourth of that money on their build out.

But, yea, Tom's a douche. It's basically a water is wet type statement, though.

His review, in this case, is spot on.

They both arrive with some ninety percent of the nachos remaining, and over half of the guac. I issue my usual question when this happens: which dish should I allow to get cold while eating the other?

My single greatest dining pet peeve. He's woefully ignorant if he thought VC was going to correctly space out his meal.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd really expect(or ding in a review) any tex mex joint that is primarily in business to sling chips and margaritas to concentrate on proper appetizer/entree course pacing.

I've only been once. Me and two friends got a family platter which was steak and chicken fajitas, grilled shrimp, and everything that goes with fajitas. All three of us thought it was really good.
