Tipping on large takeout order

I usually tip a dollar or two if I'm picking up take out myself. I have a large order of ~$250. Being that the same amount of work is being done, what would one tip?

I've always tipped 10% or $3 whichever is greater on takeout orders...
Not sure how/why I landed on those numbers to be honest.

I do @ 10% on non-fast food take out. I don't know what is "correct".

20 bucks would probably be pretty good

No tip on takeout.

Same amount as what?

So you would tip $25? Seems generous for a takeout order.
Eta I would probably tip in the $10 to $15 range for a takeout order of $250. All they have to do is put your meal in a bag and hand it to you.

I would tip $20 but at least $10 should be fine, it's take out, they aren't serving you.

I'd say it's about right. Depending on the place, this could be around 15-20 or so plates of food. That might be 25 or 30 boxes.
Getting it all separated into boxes, labeling them, and dealing with that order entails amongst the other daily business at the time warrants a generous tip.

Maybe if they suck at their job. They should be checking everything to make sure its correct plus some other things like making sure you have napkins and silverware. I understand this isnt overly difficult but it could be time consuming and take them away from other customers who could be tipping as well.

This is what I always assume to be the case.
And yes, some nimrod will post to let us know about how the girl at Outback only does take out orders and makes $15/hr so she shouldnt get tipped.

This thread reminds me of Drew Brees getting ripped for tipping $3 on a $74 takeout order. There was an array of opinions expressed in the aftermath. There seems to be no clear consensus on an appropriate tip for takeout.

I typically tip pretty well on take out orders as long as the service is still good. On an order that size I would probably take care of them because they are responsible for checking everything in the bag and making sure everything is there. I would maybe give them 15-25 depending on my happiness level upon leaving.

It does sort of matter IMO. If its the bartender or another server putting all this together its different than if someone only responsible for take out orders is doing it. Either way the OP said its the same amount of work as when he has a small order which is incorrect.

Why would you tip on a takeout order? You tip a server on the appreciation of their quality service to you. You were not served by anyone if you have a takeout order.

didnt that come to not be true?
my thing with take out tipping, is that most people do not tip on take out at all. I generally do 2 or 3$ on a meal for 1 or 2.
I think most workers would be happy with $5 or $10 putting take out containers into bags with some silverware on a $250 order.

He acknowledged the $3 tip, Lester. He said if he had dined in he would tip 20+%.

You weren't served, but the person/people who took your order, verified that the order was correct when received from the kitchen, packed into individual boxes, labeled the boxes, and then packed it into a bag with silverware, napkins, etc... ALL in a timely fashion most definitely provided you a service.
If that's not worth a tip to you so be it...
