Anybody got any reviews of the salt lick in driftwood Texas. Going to Austin this weekend, people we are going with want to go there. Any recommendations for breakfast Saturday morning. Staying out by the airport.

Go to Franklin or La BBQ instead, both are actually IN Austin. The Salt Lick sauce is good but that's about it. If you're gonna drive outside Austin for BBQ, you'd be better off driving to Lockhart(Kruez or Smitty's) or Luling (City Market).

It's a great place to go with a group. The brisket is damn good. It's BYOB and cash only so go prepared.

There was a time when it was touted as the best in Texas, but then Aaron Franklin came along.

Kruez has opened a second location, in College Station. I still say their sausage is the best in the world, the jalapeno cheese cannot be beat, but their brisket/clod is lagging behind the new comers here in Texas. Killens here in Houston is probably on par with Kruez's brisket, Franklin/La BBQ are head and shoulders ahead of everyone.

The hot new thing here in the state is beef ribs, Franklin/La BBQ/Louis Muelller, and Killens both excell at that.

Thanks for the tips...sausage is a must, obviously.

Won't be able to get downtown this trip, spending most of our time on the Colorado/Lake Travis....will have to allow 3 hrs to wait for Franklin next time around.

don't listen to the haters. they are all good and I still have a soft spot for the Saltlick. only go to the original.

the pretty drive, the awesome pit in the middle and the whole experience. its damn good bbq and the sauce is amazing. I highly recommend it

all others mentioned are great as well, you cant go wrong. I just don't get why people think once a new great restaurant comes along it automatically means the other one is crap. Franklins is the tits, if you want to go at 7-8am and wait for 3-4 hours and hangout then go for it.

if you are wanting to get out of Austin and have a pretty drive and not have to wait long if at all then go to Salt Lick. Their ribs are my favorite and their brisket is top 3 with Franklins and Pecan Lodge in Dallas.

Would love to do franklins but don't think the others want to wait that long to eat.

i would say allow 30-40 minutes for the drive but like i said its pretty and a nice drive. if you've never been i highly recommend. its a great experience. bring cash and get a jar of the sauce that they sell on site. you wont be disappointed.

as far as breakfast, Magnolia Cafe and Kerby Lane are classics and highly recommend. i believe both are 24 hours a day and very good.

you can also go by a Torchys Tacos or Juan in a million because both serve breakfast and are great with a mexican influenced menu.

cant go wrong, austin has some great eats.

I have not been to the Salt lick yet but wife and I did Stubbs BBQ Gospel Brunch Buffet last year and really enjoyed the experience and the food. The year before we stopped at Blacks Meat Market in Lockhart and it was really, really good.

I was greatly underwhelmed by the food at the Salt Lick. The vibe is fun, esp for a group...but it's nowhere near "best in TX". And the pineappley sauce is way too sweet, IMHO. City Market in Luling, Kreuz, Franklin...all are better BBQ.

Salt Lick is a cool experience. Pretty good BBQ, but there are far better places in Austin, like Franklin, La BBQ, John Mueller Meat Co, Micklethwait, Stiles Switch, etc. Salt Lick's ribs are very good, and their sides are spot on, but their other meats are pretty average. I like brisket and their brisket is just not that great.

If you are really short on time, hit up John Mueller. Usually you won't wait more than 30 min to get food and it is on par with the best in Austin.

For breakfast, hit up Taco Deli or Torchy's (get the Dirty Sanchez) if you want tacos. If you want a sit-down place, Magnolia Cafe (South Congress) is pretty good for a diner-like (think Louie's) experience. If you want a good coffee shop experience, hit up Quack's in Hyde Park area, or Mozarts on Lake Austin.

I second this. Is a good breakfast stop. Get the Don Juan with extra tortillas. Trust me, you only need one.

Cool place, but bbq is awful.

Salt Lick is a good experience. Frickin the haters. I'd go if I were you. Tbh, no BBQ joint is worth a 3-4 hour wait like Franklin. Just go to Muellers or La and you won't be disappointed.

Terrible. Some of the worst BBQ I've had

And I don't know how Chisolm trail always gets left out of the Lockhart BBQ discussion
