Some of you may remember Wintzell's Oyster House located between downtown Fairhope and the Grand Hotel. It's been sitting vacant for years

quote:

A "Louisiana Cajun cuisine" restaurant is coming to the former Wintzell's building. Tyler Hood, owner of several Chimes restaurants in the Baton Rouge area, recently purchased the property in Battles Wharf. He said he intends to remodel the existing building but is not sure what the new restaurant's name would be

I've never eaten at the Chimes. What can we expect?

The Chimes is a solid restaurant and is always good. I've always felt you could take someone from out of town there and it would do just fine. Is it unbelievable? No, but it's a good meal. This is assuming the poor employee quality crisis or opening further away from Baton Rouge doesn't effect it.

In other words, it's basically the Wintzell's Oyster House that used to be there. I guess it's been longer than I realize since I've been in the area because I had no clue that the place had "been vacant for years."

Good place. Your standard bar type food, plus some Louisiana specialties.

I'm going by the 1990s when I lived in BR, but it was my favorite place near campus.

As others have said, The Chimes is good. I wish they’d open one in the Houston area, preferably SW Houston area.

I lived in the house behind it, now parking lot, all through the mid-90s…married a Chimes waitress from that timeframe. Good times.

They looked at that location and decided against it. It wasn't perfect for them. They know what they are doing.

No. It’s not an Alabama restaurant. It’s a good Louisiana restaurant.

This is great! Always loved the Chimes and I feel invested in them since I’ve been Around the World twice there.

Love fairhope. Trying to buy a decent spot to hold/rent and retire a long time from now.
In laws just bought a place on the bay so will be over there a bunch moving forward.

If you have any recs around this area feel free to drop me. I’ve hit up a bunch so far including but not limited to:

Camellia cafe(great)
Char 32(mediocre)
Wash house (great)
Wok by the Bay (great)
Fairhope inn (mediocre for dinner/more brunch)
Hope Farm (great)
Red and white( great but casual)
The mill (food house with TVs and bar)

Bars:

Tiki bar
Bone and barrel

It should do well there
Nice beer selection as well
I'm guessing someone from LA that lives there now probably is involved in some capacity

Ehh, I'm just saying they are very similar type places food/menu-wise and I would make the assumption of however marginally better you may find the Chimes (original location) to be to Wintzell's (original location) will probably be all but indistinguishable when you put either in an offshoot location in Fairhope, Alabama.
