What is your go-to brand and where do you buy it?

Royal Oak - Home Depot

Big Green Egg brand lump charcoal is the same stuff but they charge more per pound for it at the garden center.

Also, it's real oak and imparts that flavor, it's not just a brand name.

Here's a useful reference:

I use Rockwood Lump... you can get it from Goodwood. It is pretty good stuff and definitely a step above some of the usual brands. nakedwhiz.com has a complete rating system of lump. I like the rockwood and the ozark brands.... in a pinch i use stubs.

Yep. Inexpensive and great results for my low-n-slows and my high-temp cooks.

Got some bad news for you. Unfortunately Ozark stopped producing charcoal.

correct.... its what i use as my base to smoke with. I have a Good One open range.... these guys like many of the other pits like lang, yoder etc make competition pits that real competition guys use.... its all they (Good One) recommends you use if possible. it burns clean and leaves little ash when controlled properly

Closing the vents to restrict airflow helps.

And Royal Oak. Great price and readily available. And several large pieces per bag which are perfect for the long smokes (18+ hours when I do a butt).

Has anyone ever tried coconut husk charcoal?

It's natural, leaves almost no ash and has no flavor, so you can use any wood to smoke and precisely control the flavor without added flavor from the charcoal.

I was able to hold lump at 225* on my first cook without a plate setter.

It's about making a smaller fire and how you use the vents/

I've read about that stuff, never seen any. Where do you get it? Looks like charcoal churros.
