I picked up a bag of spicy crackers in a gas station in North La a couple of weeks ago. They looked homemade. They were saltines with red pepper on them. Does anyone have a recipe?

Most people call em firecrackers. There are many slight variations on the recipe: LINK

Camp crackers

2-3 sleeves of saltines
1/2 cup of olive oil
3-4 table spoons of red pepper flakes
1 pack of ranch dry seasoning mix
Place in ziplock bag and shake it up. Shake a little more from time to time.

Scales easily.

I love these things. Currently working on a rub that had this recipe on the top.

The picture above looks like the one we have made for years and is great.

1 BX saltine crackers (all 4 sleeves) for whatever reason Zesty brand works better.

1 pkg Ranch dressing mix (powder)
3 Tb red pepper flakes
1 1/3 C canola oil.

Place all four sleeves of crackers in a large zip lock bag. Add the canola oil to the crackers, mix crackers around as you add to help distribute the oil. Add ranch dressing mix and pepper flakes. Close bag and rotate bag around to help mix ingredients. Every couple hours rotate the bag to help mix ingredients.

We baked them in the oven for a few minutes after mixing and they stay crisp.

We also use oyster crackers from time to time...those disappear a handful at a time!

Oyster Crackers and mini saltines are my favorite. I usually cut back on the oil a little with the small ones.

1 and a third cup of oil seems like a ton of oil for one box of crackers

My mother and wife use this recipe with good results. Had some yesterday with gumbo.

2 sleeves crackers
3/4 cup canola oil
1 package dry ranch dressing mix
1.5 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp ground cayenne
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder

Preheat oven to 250

Combine all ingredients except crackers. Spread crackers on cookie sheet and drizzle mixture over them. Toss lightly to coat evenly.

Bake in oven 15 minutes. Remove and use spatula to gently rotate and flip crackers. Bake 10 more minutes.

Remove from oven and let crackers cool on baking racks.

We’ve used similar recipes. But we bake on a low temp, like 225-250, for maybe 20 minutes. I use a small mixing bowl and a whisk to really get the oil and seasonings mixed up before adding to the crackers. Helps there not to be clumps of ranch on a cracker. Big old Tupperware if it’s clean or a big ziploc if not. Dry on a wire rack after baking.

I did something similar to this but no black pepper and I added smoked paprika. I did not bake them, let them sit over night. They are on the counter being destroyed by each passerby. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Use unsalted crackers for best results.

That's the recipe we use with a few variations. We use the little oyster crackers, granulated garlic and onion.
