Southfin Southern Poke'

quote:

Poké is a Hawaiian fish concept. The word itself in Hawaiian translates to “to cut” or “to dice,” and the dish typically consists of cuts of marinated sushi-grade fish—usually ahi tuna—atop rice, salad or noodles in a bowl. It’s a concept that has been gaining traction with foodies and restaurants in major U.S. cities in recent years.

Iv'e never been to one of these places.

I've had the poke from Twine, and it is increadible, but way too expensive ($20/lb). If they can make a good poke meal (poke, sushi rice, seaweed salad, and a drink) for less than $10, I will be a regular.

We first heard about this over a year ago. I'm afraid during that time that Poke is no longer hip. Too bad.

Baton Rouge is typically about 5 years behind the trendy world, and the outlying areas (AP, Livingston, etc) are another 5 years behind them on average. AP didn't get the first rap music until 2002 and didn't really get popular until 2009.

The more interesting part of the article for me is the new central food prep center plan. I presume they aim to hit the catering market hard.

No offense but most people in BR have no clue what poke is. So while BR may be behind as far as the trend, it will still be something new and different for Baton Rougeans to try. I think it'll do well.

One opened up in my hood on Magazine street. I've been in there and checked out the menu but have yet to catch it for lunch. But you won't get out of there without spending over $15 and I know I'd Ben hungry again in 2 hours. Not sure if it is worth it, but I'll certainly give it a try.

This news excites me greatly.

City Pork on Jefferson had an awesome raw tuna app on the menu that they recently replaced. If that's an indication then I'll be a regular.

I'll be interested to see how this does. Can't skimp on the quality of the ahi. I love poke, but I'd be skeptical if a poboy shop opened in hawai'i.

Neither a good poboy or good poke should be difficult to do well, honestly.

I've tried a lot of fricked up poboys.

City Pork is beginning to own the BR culinary scene. Pretty sad.

Probably has a lot to do with them getting an LSU concessions deal.

And the fact that they like to do their own cured meats and it takes space to do this.

Maybe so. But living on the west coast and having lots of Hawaiian neighbors and friends...there's still nothing even close to a poke restaurant around here.

I've been making it myself for years....I wish there was a place around here....hell, anywhere in the northern part of the state, that had poke.

Their tuna portions are very small compared to other poke places that I've tried.

Just drove by this place and saw a bunch of now hiring signs. Anyone know when they are opening?

I drive by there every day and never knew what was being built until today. Looked it up after seeing the hiring signs and now I'm really interested in trying this place. I've never had a bad meal at City Pork so I'm looking forward to it.
