You can cook, and I'll provide...well, something else.

It is not a matter of being able to afford anything. Some people have no desire, nor reason to own a sports coat.

It's all part of the experience IMO. If it's a special occasion and I'm being taken to an upscale restaurant, I want to get dolled up and enjoy that experience out.

If everyone is in shorts and ballcaps, I am going to feel out of place dressed up.

There is nothing wrong with not wanting to dress up.. you simply should dine at a place where it's not expected. Dress codes are in existence as part of the ambiance to diners.

In choosing my birthday dinner in Vegas, I have been looking for upscale restaurants where everyone will be done up and looking for the same experience that I am. My S.O. doesn't need to be dropping $200+ for us to eat in blue jeans.

I would have loved to be Mark Twains neighbor. Early century parties in the quarter and down in the Keys. Wear a sears sucker everyday and a straw hat, drink all day, party all night. I could do that...

Would you go for the stringy bowtie, or the more square one?

Why both, silly. But the skinny tie gives one that Harlan Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken look. So maybe the square one more than the string one.

depending on which one of those scenarios I had to witness would determine my need for treatment. On the other hand, if the other scenario plays out I'll probably dine out at that establishment more often if she is a regular.

I have no issue with required dress codes. That's up the restaurant and if they require a coat and tie, that's what men should wear, for example. However, if the restaurant doesn't specify, people don't have to wear a coat and tie whether the dining is upscale, expensive or otherwise there's nothing we can do about it, but suck it up or don't go.

If one wants to eat where one is assured that that everyone there is dressed up, one should go to a restaurant which requires that type of dress. Otherwise, criticizing someone for not wearing a coat where one is not required to wear a coat is like spitting in the wind.

I've seen folks write that it ruined their meal, upon seeing people not dressed up in a restaurant which didn't require a suit. I guess I just can't understand spending time concerned about that.

Sure, CC, but don't use my name and add an "a" before "weenie".

I don't think it's hot, though.

I definitely agree with you there. If a place doesn't have a dress code, people need to shut up about anything they don't like.

I was simply responding to his hatred for dress codes

Yes but chances are if somebody's one eyed weenie is popping out it is probably Weiner's.
