Well that's quite a selective reading of the thread.

We're talking about their IPAs. 60/90. You were the only one that didn't say that they at least liked them. Boo said 60 was a solid beer and 90 was a standard bearer.

I'm not saying that they're the best thing out there these days or that everyone on this board thinks they are but that was a bad link to use if you wanted some backup to your opinion.

When you get to the point of talking about beers that are that widely distributed and overall that well regarded you have account for personal opinions.

Do I think they're the best IPAs in the country? No. Do I think they're in the upper-echelon of standard production IPAs? Sure.

I don't think they're awful. But I've had dozens of IPAs I like better. perhaps just a personal preference thing.
fair enough. I've got to stop taking the use of the word "overhyped" as "they suck". See also: the great Pliny The Elder debate

Completely agree.

Definitely. Just means there is a lot of acclaim for it that maybe is a little overstated. Exaggerated, if you will. Doesn't mean it's bad, just not AS GOOD as some people might lead you to believe.

I'd never consider them the best IPAs in America. Solid, sure, but that's a lofty claim.

Fair enough. There are other threads where I found evidence akin to my opinion, which is that the brewery as a whole is pretty mediocre.

Here I posited that 90 is good. Perhaps I need to revisit that one. I've had the 60 more times than the 90, maybe they have run together.

I had a pale ale last night that figuratively shite on the Sierra Nevada pale ales of the world but I got hell for saying that they shouldn't be the textbook definition of a pale ale any more.

By whom? I agree, the definition of a pale ale is a lot less cut-and-dried than it once was. Dale's, Zombie Dust, and many others pack a hop punch that blows SN out the water.

What should, in your opinion?

those are only pale ales by name. They fit in with IPAs nicely

Hill Farmstead's Citra pale ale.

Honestly, that color/body/flavor/aroma was absolutely perfect. If that could be re-created with other hop varieties to even nine-tenths the quality of that beer on a mass scale I'd say they were all perfect representations of what I want in a pale ale.

Keep in mind this was only 5.4% and not zombie dust level bitter.

Don't believe I've ever had that one. Sounds from your assessment, and backed up by a quick google search, to be a superb example of the style. Will put on my radar.

Completely agree with all of this... although it's not really a fair standard to hold other breweries to.

Zombie Dust and Dale's both clock in at around 60 IBUs. I wouldn't be opposed to saying more like 20-50 IBUs being normative for PAs and then increasing the range of IPAs to somewhere around 50-75 IBUs.

But shite, at the end of the day it's splitting hairs I suppose.

I said if they could do it to nine-tenths that quality.

Yep, I was just about to come type something very similar.

That's like saying that Pliny the Younger is the textbook standard that all DIPAs should be judged by. Maybe it is, but chances are most people won't ever get to try it.

Duh, what a noob.

I was calling BMoney a noob.

In general I would like to think that a Triple IPA along the lines of Younger would be nothing like a Barleywine such as Old Guardian.
