He says Entergy doesn’t know who is responsible for the ghost meter, but then says he owes $40k. Sounds like they do know who is responsible.

1) what he says about the city is true
2) what he says about entergy is likely untrue

Why do you think that. They seem like they are a circus to deal with. Almost as bad as the mayors office.

I deal with entergy almost every day. They are a client of mine and I’m a client of theirs
the rules for metering are pretty failsafe. If there’s power on, there’s a meter. If there’s a meter, there’s a certificate of occupancy. If there’s a CO, there’s a party responsible for the power bill.
getting your power shut off is easy. Getting it on is the hard part

So what does his lease say? I dont understand how you operate in a building but dont know who's supposed to pay the light bill.
I pay mine according to the 3rd party lease I signed. There isnt anything about the space I rent that I dont know about or its location.
Maybe there's more to it but it seems like the business owner is playing dumb.
Although everything he said about the city itself is 100% accurate.

Like most commercial properties, and especially those in the French Quarter, I’m sure it’s a triple net lease. There is probably a meter somewhere but I’d be willing to bet St. John isn’t leasing the whole building. That probably means also there could be one meter for the whole building. Entergy says “this building owes $40,000 and if not paid we are turning the meter off.”
Now probably St. John owes some of that balance, but likely not all of it. Meanwhile good chance the property owner doesn’t care, if meter turns off, lessees all put in default and they keep deposit and re-let to new tenants who have a dream of owning a restaurant in the French quarter. Rinse. Repeat.

one meter on a multi tenant building means one of two things…the meter is in a single tenants name, or the meter is in the landlords name. If the first case, the tenant is responsible for the whole bill full stop. If the second case, the landlord is responsible (and thus will be getting the bills).
either way, someone is getting a power bill and that someone isn’t paying it

I feel so dumb. They turned his power off for lack of payment. He says no one even knows where the meter is located.
I thought when they decide to turn off someone's power, they pull the meter, which kills the power?
Evidently, someone in Entergy knew where the meter was, or the power would still be on.
What am I missing here?

Entergy makes tons of mistakes in NOLA. They charge people crazy amounts. When people call and ask Entegy just says “pay what you would normally pay and we will figure it out.”
Also, this is Entergy New Orleans. They are different than Entergy Louisiana that most people deal with - they are two separate subsidies. Entergy New Orleans is a mess and has continually talked about either merging with Entergy Louisiana or selling Entergy New Orleans out right.
Edit: Entergy New Orleans also has an issue where they apply payments to the wrong accounts. Sometimes for months/years.

Not necessarily. Entergy says cut off power at XYZ address. The employee drives up, only sees 1 meter at that ad dress and cuts the power.
However, he should be able to compare the meter number on his bill with the meter that has been turned off. If his electricity is paid up to date on the meter that’s on the bill then they cut off the wrong one.

In the old days, this is how you end up in a trunk.
We should bring those back

I have spoken to @EntergyNOLA and they are willing to work with St. John to bring a resolution and restore power tonight. I have reached out to Chef Eric as well. My office is asking St. John for permission to review their account. I’m asking both parties to come to the table.

This is interesting. Hopefully, they can get to the bottom of this and work something out. I don't see Cook as a guy who doesn't pay his bills. Something is amiss. Just don't know exactly how it got to this point.

Such bullshite it takes this level of attention to get Entergy to the table. There are countless stories like this across the city where Entergy doesn't apply common sense and just rapes the customer because they have no competition.

In the NOLA article, Entergy says they cannot discuss specifics because he would not grant them permission to do so, but they stated that they confirmed both the location and reading of the meter.
It does not sound like a "ghost" meter. Maybe Entergy is full of shite, but with this going viral I doubt they put that statement out if they couldn't find the meter.

If its a smart meter they can shut it off remotely. And on the opposite end, if there was an issue with the meter they would know almost instantaneously.
