what's the problem here? Phare is GREAT just tell them no salt please and add to your taste.Great place, great family, stay steadily busy by word of mouth,no advertising and the homemade cheese cakes are the best no matter what flavor he does :)

I like the fried shrimp. No salt?? How is that possible? There's too much salt in the damn batter. But hey, that's just MY opinion. Apparently this place rocks your world....just not mine. I'll pass on the overpriced too salty food myself.

Italian Food Market - Is this the place on Johnston by the smoke shop? I didn't know they served food.

Nice restaurant behind Crossroads bookstore on Johnston St, near the intersection with Guilbeau. It's not a market.

They have what I would call "fresh" tomatoe sauce. It's not a heavy sauce like you find at most Italian restaurants. Taste like fresh tomatoes.

I recommend the chicken cacciatore and the osso buco.

Very Good.

Is premium - best I've ever had and the beef stew. The owner is a true sicilian off the boat. It really is his sauces - I've never had better.

Ohh, and for whoever was talking about there being no decent italian places in Lafayette, go to Marcello's that place is phenomenal. May be the best italian restaurant I have ever been to.

This place is good. When he was at his other location it was more of a market. He had the best imported pasta and a good Italian sausage from Chicago. The pasta had a very good aroma after cooking it. I haven't been able to find pasta like that in any store and he no longer sells it.

I've been meaning to try that place out. My wife and I went for lunch one monday but it was closed.

Anyone remember the original marcello's in the trip mall past the Acadiana mall (I mean Mall of Acadiana)? That was a neat place.

I don't mean this in a condescending way, but you need to go to more Italian restaurants. I like Gene Todaro, he's a nice guy, but this isn't a great Italian restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. It's a cool concept, what with the retail wine store in the restaurant, but the food is average at best. If you want a solid generic red sauce veal parm, it's fine, but it's no better than Carrabas. If you want something authentic, made with high quality ingredients, you won't find it here. He uses shredded parmesean from a bag on salads and other dishes. That to me is unforgivable. This is at least the third iteration of Marcellos in Lafayette. The second version served me the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant, and that was twenty years ago, when my frame of reference was much narrower. My beef with the place is that they have the time and the resources to source better ingredients and serve better food, but they don't. Gene is in that place every night, so I don't know what the issue is. But they don't serve food that is any better than a chain like Carrabas.

2 Pauls may be the best bbq place in Lafayette. Their meats are very good, and their mac and cheese side is awesome.

Your explanation was perfect. Cool, you need to head to NO and try Domenica and A Mano. By far the two best Italian places in LA. For real Italian, not bastardized versions.

I have not. A friend of mine has and he didn't like it, but he's not a big food person.

I hope too soon, but probably not until late summer at the earliest. I'm getting in the car tomorrow and taking a week to drive to San Francisco, where I will pick up the wife and kids at the airport and continue on to Yountville where we will be hanging out for a month. Going to play golf a few times on my way to CA and will begin stuffing my face early next week and continue for the next six weeks or so. If I haven't eaten myself in to oblivion by the end of July, we will be going to N.O. later this summer for a weekend of gluttony. I will be checking in with you and the other N.O. experts for advice.

you know, as you develop a pallate you'll find out that ONE place is never the overall "BEST" it depends on what you want to eat and there has to be some discrimination in your taste. I mean you learn what place does a dish like YOU like it and if they are good, they will tailor it to your taste if you ask like no salt etc etc. Lafayette is great for that because other than the chain joints, most places really want you to enjoy what they serve you. May sound like pompas BS but I have been here since 1972 and I believe that AND it is not just Lafayette........
