Consider getting one that is wall-mounted. That's what I have and it takes up no counter space, yet is always available.
I didn't know they existed until I bought one at a garage sale.

I got a basic digital one off of amazon for $20. It's worked well for 3 years.

No brand rec for you, but make sure it is accurate to the gram. Cheap ones aren't, and this makes them useless for baking w metric recipes.

We got the Oxo kitchen scale. Accurate, dependable, and not too expensive. Make sure whichever scale you get has the tare function. Indispensable when weighing into a bowl.

I have an Ozeri thin model that is about the size of a small ipad. $20 on Amazon, and it has good reviews. It has tare, does ounces or grams, and takes very little space. The small size was a big factor for me.
I did have to replace the batteries after about 2 years.

Cook's Illustrated picked the Oxo Food Scale as their winner in an equipment review. $50. They said it was "exceptionally intuitive." Great reviews on Amazon. LINK
