STRICTLY On food, nothing else.

Franklin
La Barbeque
Terry Black's
Micklethwait
Rollin Smoke
Kerlin

Interstellar is too far out from Downtown for me to be able to make it.

Ive only been to Terry Black's, but can't imagine anything else could be much better re: brisket, ribs and sides.

Franklin
Terry Blacks
La Barbecue

I like all three of those. Was really unimpressed by micklethwaits the one time I tried it. Sides were good, but they had very little smoke flavor in the beef.

I only know of Kerlin for the brisket kolaches.

I really wanted to go to Franklin's but could only go to Terry Black's. I was very impressed with Terry Black's and the owner showed me his smoke room and gave me some insight when I visited a few weeks ago. Very cool dude.

Of the Austin joints I've been to and only considering the smoked meats, there isn't much difference between Terry Black's, LA BBQ, and Interstellar.

Micklethwait's is a notch below these.

Have not been to others but will mention that Warren from Interstellar spoke highly of Leroy and Lewis.

Is the quality that much better than a spot like Terry Black's? (Given you have to wait for hours at Franklin's and can generally just walk into Terry Black's.)

It's definitely a discernible step up from Terry Blacks imo but Black's is still good. I'd say in terms of brisket, La BBQ isn't too far behind Franklin. Maybe I should have had those two closer together. What really puts Franklin over the edge for me is that absolutely nothing compares to the Franklin beef rib. Whether you think that's worth waiting several hours for is obviously subjective.

I left town before Interstellar was a big thing but I will say Leroy and Lewis does some really great stuff that's outside the usual brisket/ribs.

Interesting, I would definitely like to give Franklin's a try one day to see what all the hype is about, but last few times I was in town the wait was just too long for what we had planned for the day

If you plan ahead and have a big group (minimum order is 5 lbs), you can order online. You just schedule a pickup time and they bring it right to your car.

Couldn’t be easier and no need to wait!

I’d be curious where the Lockhart trio (Kreuz, smittys and blacks) would rank amongst the Austin restaurants considering they’re only about 30 miles away.

Kreuz is the best bbq I’ve ever had.

There is a considerable gap, two completely different types of barbecue.

Terry Blacks is currently building a location in Lockhart and will immediately be the best place in town.

For me, Smitty's has the best brisket I have ever had.

Black's does a tremendous beef rib.

Valentina’s?

They have to be up in there somewhere. I enjoy the hell out of Smitty’s brisket as well out in Lockhart. There’s something about walking into the restaurant with a live fire next to you.

Terry Blacks is pretty meh when compared to the others.

It’s a tourist restaurant now.

Well that makes sense, bc I am a tourist.

I do not eat brisket very often. For my unrefined pallet, Terry Black's was absolutely amazing. The sides were also great. Would definitely go back to TB's or try one of the other places mentioned in this thread.

What do you recommend?
