Some recipes call for puff pastry, do any of you know if the local stores carry this (Winn dixie, Alexanders, Leblancs)? If so, what brands are good?

Any regular store will have it. Generally they all only sell Pepperidge Farm brand. It works just fine.

Agree with LL.It's usually in the frozen pies/desserts section. I see it everywhere. Allow time to defrost it, though.

I know WD has Pepperidge Farm, which is made with shortening. I don't know which stores carry Dufour, which is made with butter. But actually Pepperidge Farms does better in taste tests then Dufour.

It's so tricky to use from the frozen state. If you you try to unroll it before it's thawed properly it will break. If you wait too long it's a mess. I love the results but detest working with the stuff.
ETA: With that said, any major grocery should have this in the freezer section.

I haven't had trouble working with it. It's easier to work with when it's cold, so if you defrost it out of the fridge, put it back in for at least 30 minutes to get the chill back for easier handling. You need to roll it on a floured surface with a floured pin. You can brush the excess flour off once done with a pastry brush or just get a paper towel and lightly sweep over it. No problems.
When not using one sheet, keep it in the fridge until you're ready for it. I made a salami gruyere app with it over the holidays several times which was quite simple and quite good. Wasn't from Tasty, though. I believe it was an Ina recipe.
I love puff pastry. I can eat it by itself baked.
