I'm not a big wine person, but this is where I take issue with these "studies" and internet gibberish where they over simplify the point of all wine tasting the same.

There are really bad low priced wines and I think it is worth spending at least $15 and talking with wine people to get something a little better than bland/boring table wine.

This is a little too definitive of a statement, and obviously rather stupid and wrong.

I agree with the premise of the article though that the majority of the "expert opinions" on wine is a bunch of bologna.

well seeing how one is a malt beverage and one is not. Nevermind, but I will never understand the personal connection folks make with this disproved belief, it seems it would be a relief to know that there are literally tons of good wines through all price ranges, and that you have just been fooled by great marketing practices.

Of course. It's hyperbole. Just trying to grab a little attention to the thread to get it started.

Most wine tastes the same

Went to dinner other night with coworker and his wife. She ordered a $200 bottle of red and then a $40 bottle and I liked the $40 better

Why 15? Why not 16, or 20. What if one is on sale? Is it now a lessor wine cause it is 9.99?

If I was a winemaker I would make my 9.00 wine 19.95. Put a helluva label on it, and make sure to spend money marketing to the liquor folks......everybody wins.

It was just a number I threw out there jackass.

Sorry, but I have a brain and can pick out bad wines from good wines. It also helps to have a great wine shop where I can talk with the staff and consistantly find good wines in the $13.75 to $20 range(hope that made you happy).

And yes, I do feel bad for those that just go with the marketing ploys and buy cheap shite and don't have a clue that there is a difference in wines on the market.

Do you buy the cheapest quality of everything? I'd bet you can perform a study showing Walmart quality shirts are the same caliber as a $400 button up.

Not at all. Where quality matters, I pay much more.

Of course this is where folks always take this debate...which has nothing to do with wine or the research that exposes the fallacy that is wine tasting. It is a very strong emotional connection, as if people have attached some of their self worth to the wine bottle.

I agree, and is the difference WORTH $60? Maybe to some.

"Where quality matters" is one way of tap dancing around things.

I bet they always have the recommended wine in stock.....probably close to an endcap.....I doubt they ever send you out to another shop for a line their distributors don't carry.

Nope their distributor decides what they put out based on profitability and demand, demand is created by the folks at the store. Who in fact are trying to make recommendations based on a limited inventory of a product that has been shown that the best of the best cant tell a difference in.

Shirts: thread and ply matter, buttons matter, collar matters, fabric and weave matter, lay matters, yoke mattes, how it launders matter, color integrity, pattern, mostly objective measures.

Wine: Label...matters.

tap, tap, tap

This is horse shite. I have went through multitudes of wine tastings and can assure you that I can tell huge differences between varietals and often times regions, vineyards and notes held within. How can you say that a tobacco filled, peppery meritage is anywhere close to a Pinot noir or merlot with limited character. I can taste the differences between merlot, Pinot noir, Cabernet, Syrah, zin and often times malbecs.

LOL I'm sure you can

there is a difference between good and bad wine, but to for someone to sit here and tell me they taste the "aged tobacco leaves playfully wrapping up a hint of black cherry aged for precisely 528 days, 3 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds and enriched by a chocolatey finish" is absurd

Considering it is the best wine store in the state, I'm guessing they have no reason to send me to another store.

You win. I don't think there is any point in debating this anymore. All wine is the same. We should nationalize wine making and let one company make it all.
