1. What are they? I know this is a dumb question, but oh well. (I know what they are in the macro sense-just wondering about them as supplements)
2. Are purchased products worth it?

In what way? If I could just remember to take mine daily, they work wonders if you have .. uh... "issues" of that kind

If you have pretty normal digestion, I don't know that you'd notice enough difference to justify the money.

I've bought the yogurt (not all yogurt has probiotics, I don't believe) when I've had that intestinal virus thing. I bought the capsules for the first time not long ago because I got the intestinal virus that's going around, twice, and I think it helped make me normal again.

Probiotics promote digestive health as they have the "good" live bacteria. I don't think you have to have a problem to take them, but if you do, they could be helpful. I thought about taking them daily, but I don't have issues, so I didn't keep it up.

I wouldn't waste money on supplements. Better to eat a lot of things like yogurt or kimchi.

I drank them every day when I was in Thailand. I didn't get sick. I'm not sure if that's why.

Now I drink Green Vibrance every day, which has a ton in there...along with a host of other stuff. I've never felt better.

My overall health improved when I started taking probiotics regularly. I don't get respiratory infections or other illnesses as often. Last year I forgot to take them on a vacation and I ended up sick. So they are worth it to me.

I have tried the store-bought kind and I also ferment my own foods. I prefer the fermented foods over the pills because the food tastes awesome and a pill is a pill. I try and always keep some fermented carrots and radishes around. I'm not a big raw veggie fan, but I can do some damage to fermented veggies. They're sour and salty and sweet and delicious. Plus they make my #2s better.

It's bacteria. Good bacteria that helps digestion.

Yes they are worth it.

I was skeptical, but my GI doc recommended Align and I started taking it. I noticed in under 2 days that I liked what it did.

Now 75% of my poops are no wipers. I had never had one previous to taking align.

I had tried other probiotics and eat yogurt daily. Nothing set me right like align.

I slice them with my food processor attachment, put them in a jar, add water with a salt ration of about 2.5 TBSP:4 cups of water, and weigh down the veggies with a sack of marbles to keep them submerged. Place cheesecltoh over the jar. Place in room temperature cabinet. Wait 4-6 days. Once they've reached your desired sourness, you move them to the fridge.

I highly highly recommend The Art of Fermentation. I heard an interview with the author on a brewing podcast, and it piqued my interest in the subject. I got his book and started toying with things. Ended up really liking it.

Definitely, Sandor Katz' book on fermentation is fascinating. I think my summer project is gonna be homemade ginger beer, following his instructions.
