We're pretty sure we want a gas cooktop (has to be able to be converted for liquid propane) and double wall ovens, a microwave drawer and dishwasher. We're keeping the current fridge, as it's only a few years old.

I don't think I need chef level stuff. There are only two of us in the household, and while we host family get-togethers, we don't cook for large groups very often.

Viking and Wolf and Thermador seem to provide more than we need. What are other good brands?

I've been in the market for a new oven and found this one at Top's. Love the French doors on the top. You pull on one and the other opens simultaneously. It's a good idea because it leaves the front of the oven free, you don't have to reach around from the side as you may have to if the door swung down.

Top's carries all the brands you've mentioned.

We haven't checked out Tops, thanks. I did see that model at Best Buy last night and found it intriguing.

We saw a GE Cafe model cooktop that looked nice. I don't belong to Consumer Reports anymore, so I can't check out their ratings. I've seen good and mixed reviews elsewhere online.

Those do look nice. I like them better than the other GE style, I think it's called contemporary or something like that.

We saw a $10,000 Viking stove. That is our whole budget for a gas cooktop, range hood, double ovens (one convection) microwave drawer and dishwasher! And if we could stay under 8K, even better!

For 6.95 you can get a one month subscription. I think it would be a good idea in this case.

I saw a new house a few months ago that had Kitchenaid appliances and they looked really nice. The builder said that he had $13K for the kitchen appliances which included refrig, gas range, oven, drawer microwave, two dishwashers.

They looked very nice and if you delete the refrig and one of the dishwashers it may meet your budget.

If you want a really nice luxurious look, and have good high btu burners, and good build design.
Not much will match the burner btu and burner spread of a Thermidor or Viking, but there are great higher end big name branded items. Pretty much any natural gas oven or anything natural gas can be changed to Propane. The igniters are usually designed for both, really just changing the regulators and intake line.
So your fuel should not be a problem, just the added expense of needing new parts added to it, or many times you can get the units already with the Propane components.

I would look at Kenmore Elite, GE Profile and even Whirlpool. Each makes some great looking units, and they do their job. I think their pricing is good for the quality level. On the Dishwasher, no mater what color the front panel, I would recommend a stainless steel inner tub.
Any particular features that you want? Things to avoid?
Pretty much internally they are the same from one to the other. The differences in most appliances is solely electronics and appearance and 'added features'.

(Except for the Korean, European and New Zealand (F/P) brands, which while nice and functionally superior I'm not sure the higher price is really worth it)

That's awesome, like commercial oven doors, I haven't seen that domestically except for people with Vulcan ovens, which are really uncommon in homes.

It's time to replace my aging electric cooktop and I've looked at gas but I'm becoming more and more intrigued with induction cooktops. Anyone have any first-hand experience with them?

I plan on an induction cooktop in our new construction. I played around with the Wolf brand at their showroom in Houston and really liked the responsiveness and ease of cleaning. Induction also is much more efficient and will heat up your kitchen less than gas and requires less ventilation.

I will put in a gas line just incase I find I don't like it (unlikely) or for resale.

I went with a 36" dcs range which comes with a free dcs dishwasher, LG counter depth fridge, single wall oven (range has one), and built in microwave for 10k. I like them all so far

Eta: all you have to do to change the dcs to propane is turn a knob on the back

Can't reply to individual posts at this moment, but thanks for all of the input so far! Much to think about, will be back to discuss later.

Oh, and induction cooktops? Crap, I'm finally able to have gas and now find out there is something better? Maybe I don't want to know.

Gas works after storms if there is no power. If you live in a rural area, it may be something to consider.
