In elementary for a while they also added "milk shakes" as a choice. It was an extra dollar or something and came in a carton just like the milk. Tons of extra sugar though. They soon did away with that when they realized all kids were just pounding milkshakes and not drinking the regular milk.
I also would get seconds just about everyday that I could in High School. I went to a public school in Vermilion Parish. Pizza and corn will always be the weirdest/best food combo ever

Hahah I went to school at BR public school, we had that combo too.
French Bread Pizza was favorite, my senior year I would get laughed at because most of friends would go off school to eat lunch. I would post up in the cafeteria with the freshman and sophmores and hustle more food.

I literally ate hamburger/pizza with fries and 2 chocolate milks 99% of the time in HS for lunch.
The only days that I didn't eat hamburger/pizza was on chicken tender days
This was LA public school 13 years ago.
I wasn't fat though because I was active and ate well at home.

The hamburger patty was a light grey color almost, but damn if that thing on the wheat roll wasn't good.

I've told many people this at least a few times a month. If I could eat cafeteria food just about everyday for lunch at the prices we paid, I would. Things would be much simpler.

Anyway, I loved the hell out of my school lunch growing up and I was never fat. It's all the twinkies and cookies that kids eat after school while watching tv or playing video games that make them fat.
Amen Brother!

Mmmm, chicken tender day. I was the same except my everyday lunch was chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, two rolls, french fries, chocolate milk, and juice. All of that for about $2

Does anyone remember the oh-so-disgusting "fish n cheese" patty we were subjected to on Fridays? Breaded fish with a square, cheddarish cheese portion laminated to the fish. The trick was to extract the cheese without getting any of the fish stuck to it.

I'm pretty sure the lunch pictures from other countries were taken from some elite private institutions.
Spaniards don´t eat brown rice. It doesn´t exist.....Also, bread or rice, not both, in a meal.

I remember the poor salad bar at our school. It never got visited. Who knows how long the lettuce had been sitting in that bin.
The only kids that went to the salad bar were those weird kids that dipped their fries in ranch.
fricking weirdos.

Those photos are from an ART website. Not based in reality. Move along. Move along.

Much more realistic and what I would expect.
The French still looks the most "refined," though.

quote:Notice too that the US plate had no garnishes at all. Heck, the fruit cup doesn't even have a hint of a cherry. Also, I've never seen fried chicken look so bad. Although I agree that American kids don't eat that well, methinks that Jenny Zhang is embellishing the story.
All those school lunches were taken on the same table and using the same plates. Maybe if the pictures were from actual school lunches and not staged photos.

The American lunch in this article looks fairly healthy. I think that would be typical in the northwest. I would say the American lunch in the OP would be more along the lines of what you would find in the south

Oh yeah. It was breaded with the patty.

I'd kill myself if I had to eat that.
I lived 1.5 blocks from school. Walked home for lunch. Maid always had something good.
