I was going to say the opposite. It was terribly inconsistent the last few times I've been. The last three times I've been have been completely diffeent. 1 terrible, 1 mediocre, and 1 great.
I haven't been back since about a year and a half ago when I walked out and on my way out I told the manager that it was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time that didn't come from a fast food joint. It went something like Choc's Commander's experience.

If you're using a gift card by some chance, see if it can be used for Mr. B's instead.

Last time I was there had Palace Cafe one night, Mr B's the next..

Hate to say Palace cafe blew Mr B's away that weekend.

Overcooked shrimp and cold gumbo do not impress me

Crabmeat cheese cake
The Braised pork shank
Andouille Crusted Redfish

Is the way to go

I am assuming we are talking about NO's Palace Cafe and not the one in Opelousas

It's been a while since I've been...hopefully that was an anomaly.

ask to sit upstairs

The few times I have been we had better service and a better meal upstairs.

It is not a 5 star over the top blow you away type place.

But it has long been my go to when you can't get a reservation anyplace else. Never had a bad experience and the last time I left impressed.

Been wanting to go back for the pork shank again..
really enjoyed that dish.

I think that the Turtle soup is better than Commanders. Ask for an extra shot in it.

What is this blasphemy? Did I read that someone did not like Commander's??

I've never been a fan of Mr. B's, myself...

Been many times. Not our favorite only because there are so many great restaurants in NO. That being said, we have never had a bad meal there. Get the crabmeat cheese cake and bring the kids if you have them. We are careful where we take the munckin and this is one place that we do (early dinner).

12 of us ate there one night several months ago and none of us were impressed. One of the ladies ordered a filet and it had spoiled. It smelled horrible. The waiter and manager explained that it was just the strong smell of "prime" beef. At the waiter and manager's insistance, she ate several bites and said it was bad.

They didn't take it off the bill and she spent the night in the emergency room with food poisoning.

A month earlier we ate a the Burbon house and the food was disappointing there as well. I will not patronize any Brennan's restaurants again.

I am in New Orleans at least monthly on business and there are too many good restaurants in the Quarter and Warehouse District to eat mediocre meals.

Palace Cafe is mediocre. Certainly not a "terrible" restaurant by nationwide standards, but there are too many better choices within walking distance.

I assume the poster who mentioned "gumbo ya ya" knows that is a Mr. B's dish . . . excellent chicken and andouille gumbo.

I had a horrible experience there a few years back with out of town guest . I got my guest to the street and quietly went back and tried to talk to the manager. He gave me that "f you" smirk. The capper was the fat waitress trying to convince one of the bus boys (or maybe all of them) to bang her. This conversation was within ear shot of my table and guests.
