I can't get in touch with Commander's Palace for a reservation.
They have an online reservation system.

Galatoire's

Does Galatoire's even accept reservations these days?

But yeah, August should be option #1.

Then Gautreau's, IMO.

If August is out, you need to call Gautreau's, Commander's, Clancy's or Herbsaint.

Do you and your wife have a preference in the type of cuisine or food or speciality. Like Creole, French, American or Duck, Steak, Seafood? That would help narrow it down.

Commander's does a good job of encompassing all elements of a fine, old New Orleans dining experience. Same with Galatoire's.

If you have to ask for a rec, you are probably better suited at one of those places as opposed to August imo

Its August. August is almost universally considered the best fine dining restaurant in New Orleans. Especially if you have the cash for the tasting menu with the wine pairings.

There are several places I would put ahead of Commander's, personally, such as Gautreau's and Revolution (and Coquette, if you consider it in that category).

This is all very subjective and very debatable.

You will not be disappointed with Commander's at all, I wouldn't think, I'm just saying there are others above it at this point.

Commander's just gives you everything you'd expect in a NOLA fine dining experience. Just be sure to mention to them it your anniversary.

For a celebratory meal, I would pick Commander's for the one meal and tell them it's an anniversary when you make the reservation.

The others mentioned are also excellent choices such as Gautreau's, August and R'evolution. The Galatoire's experience is best enjoyed in the downstairs dining room, in my opinion, but you must take your chances on getting in since you can't reserve for downstairs. Just depends on what night of the week and time you'd like to be there.

We are foodie's and, we have been to, and eaten, New Orleans fare many times. We aren't looking for a menu that highlights the Louisiana menu, just a nice elegant meal, for a special occasion.

I can't get into Commander's Palace, Galatoire's, or August. So, my next try is R'evelotion. Thanks for the help.

Don't rely on Open Table just in case that's what you're using. Call even if OT shows no reservations.

Hopefully, you'll get in R'evolution. Did you try Gautreau's?

I haven't eaten dinner at The Grille Room in the Windsor Court in a long time, but it was typically a nice dining atmosphere at night.

What's the date?

Uptown - Boucherie
Lakeview - Cava
Downtown - August

I'd rank them: Boucherie, August, Cava

The rest are fantastic restaurants. Commander's, however, is the most overrated restaurant in the city. The food is serviceable at best and no where near worth the price.

I've never had a meal or appetizer there that blew me away, in fact ive never even had a memorable meal there. Usually i've forgotten what i had before i make it to my car.

August, and the others you mentioned are all fantastic restaurants, but are they quintessential New Orleans restaurants? I don't think they are to the same extent that Commander's Palace is.

Just playing devil's advocate; I don't necessarily disagree with you...

OP worded it as "can't-miss restaurant in New Orleans". Does that necessarily mean a restaurant that is traditional old school New Orleans? Or does that just mean one restaurant that is so good, I can't miss it?
