Well he happened to be very personable and I enjoyed the kitchen tour.

Yes but I don't think that makes him a celebrity chef. There are lots of cookbook writers with multiple books whom most have never heard of. I think of celebrity chefs as those on television frequently and are known by the average person. Keller is rarely on television and is a behind the scenes kind of guy. Bobby Flay, Emeril, and all those fools on Food Network who have multiple shows but no restaurant.

DBGB

Momofuku

and Blue Ribbon Sushi
the steamed lobster served

These places are all downtown, but are very good. Downtown is where it's at.

Actually not downtown. Downtown usually means the Financial district

Momofuku is in the Lower East Village
Blue Ribbon Sushi is in Soho
DBGB in no Noho (just north of Houston)

To me- West Village/Village is where its at

BTW - I'm well aware that the topic of NYC restaurants has come up often. But it seems to me that the same places always get mentioned. I was looking for something different.

You seem to enjoy creating threads that guarantee you the opportunity to come across as a know-it-all.

Try Do Hwa in the Village. It is a couple of blocks off of 7th Ave on Carmine. Great Korean food. The owner's husband is from New Orleans. Great bar as well.

Really is ridiculous. Cat Cora comes to mind. Mario is an exception to the rule; there are a few others as well.

Not at all. In fact, the point of this thread was that I'm not looking for a super expensive and widely celebrated NYC restaurant. I'm looking for something more modest and low key.

Too bad you didn't just opt for those words in the first place.

You come across much more like, "I know all about Per Se, Daniel and every other Michelin resturant. Astonish me with a suggestion I don't know about."

You're right. It really is too bad. Now move along.

Thanks. I'll check out both.

ETA: Is Morimoto one of David Chang's places?

Morimoto is the Morimoto from Iron Chef fame.. The sashimi sampler appetizer and the carpaccio of kobe beef in warm oil appetizers are outstanding.

Morimoto

I do not consider it- and I live here....nor do most people I know who live here- most ple consider the financial district 'downtown'
really 'downtown' is a direction, not an area
