I'm looking for something more modest and low key.
if you would have done a search, i have given a list of a lot of places that fall into this category

I do not consider it- and I live here
I lived in the City 8 years and worked for a major national magazine owned by Hachette Publications.. My office was on Broadway between 50th and 51st.. and yes.. it does make me an authority.. Downtown was my service area.. and it's below 14th Street.. If your speaking of the Lower Manhattan Financial District, then yes.. it's the Financial Center about a mile and a half south of 14th street..
I believe it's you that needs to do the search..

I think this is different than it being a 'neighborhood'....dividing up the city in a territory for work- yes, it is downtown compared to the UES or UWS, but I wouldn't say 'i am going downtown' if I am going to the village, soho, etc
just my opinion

and you're right.. the neighborhoods like the west village or east village have their own names.. and when someone says "I work downtown," generally I assume they mean they work in the financial sector.. but if you live on the upper east side and you're going to dinner or a club downtown, you're going below 14th street..

If you're in the mood for really good Italian I recommend Patsy's.

DO NOT GO TO KITTICHAI!!! It is one of the most overpriced and tastes like bad take out. I've lived in NY for 8 years and it is honestly one of my least favorite restaurant experiences, just check out some of the reviews. OMEN is maybe my favorite Japanese restaurant I've ever been too, and in Soho.

For lunch in Midtown try Casa Lever. 54th and Park Ave.
