Gramercy Tavern for a nice dinner.
Lombardi's for a touristy pizza that's not that good.
Shake Shack for a decent fast food lunch.
Minetta Tavern for an overpriced and overhyped burger.
Eataly for a variety of foods/wines.
Stay away from food in Times Square.
NYC is full of good restaurants but I'll warn you, the food up there has nothing on food from Nola. Enjoy your stay, NYC is an awesome city to see.

Just returned from NYC, if your into Chinese a must is Kung Fu steamed buns and Ramen on 8th st., this is just a few blocks from Times Square. The place is packed for lunch and dinner, very reasonable prices, lots of food...try the steamed buns with pork and crabmeat. Also, head into Hell's Kitchen area, tons of restaurants we tried Nizza, Italian, great pizza, nice seating on the street.

Best pizza is Julianna's in DUMBO.
The Smith has a great breakfast/brunch.
Go to Golden Unicorn in China Town for Dim Sum if they're serving it that day. If not, Dim Sum Go Go across the street is pretty good.

Take the kids to walk around Bleecker Street during the day.. Around NYU you can walk around Washington Park and on Bleecker, there are lots of interesting holes in the wall for all different kinds of international eats. FISH is on Bleecker and 7th Avenue and it's got a great atmosphere with reasonably priced sandwiches and fries.. Great place for a beer and people watching.
If you're in the Bleecker Street area and want pizza instead of fish, check out Joe's Pizza at 7 Carmine Street.
If you want to try Ramen or Asian Food, Momofuku is at 171 1st Avenue, btwn 10th and 11th. It's a very hip Asian restaurant. The kids will dig it.

Definitely do Eataly on 5th Ave and 24th Street. It's an Italian food mall with desserts, cheeses, coffee, pizza, pasta, wine..

In the Central Park area around 5th Avenue and 57th street and you want to stop in somewhere, get out of the heat and relax, stop by Trump Tower on 5th Avenue and Trump Grill has a great burger and fries.

If you want a good New York bagel, imho Murray's Bagels are the best. There are several locations around the city.
