i was under the impression that a commercial brewery would maintain their original yeast strain, not harvest over and over from brewed batches. I know Parish is small compared to some, but I've seen the "labs" where yeast is maintained in larger breweries and distilleries.. Figured that wasn't an optional practice once you hit the big times.
Most commercial breweries do reuse their yeast up to a certain generation. For most sach strains (or clean ale strains) i believe they try to limit it to a lower reuseage of something like 7-10 generations. On the flip side, funky yeast (brett) is reused almost indefinitely as the aromatics from that yeast are constantly developing.

finding a new yeast isnt going to fix this problem, it is going to change all of the beers most likely.
It will change the problem, IMO. But as you stated, as they grow, starting up a lab would be beneficial. Most small breweries do not have labs, but with Parish's popularity, it probably won't be too long until they have their own.
quote:
a new yeast will eventually mutate too. i'm glad they are trying to address these issues but i dont know if their approach is the one I would use
They don't mutate, but they do evolve. And some develop or lose their original traits after enough generations of replications.

After reading that post, I didn't get the impression that this was an issue with yeast health or maintenance.
It sounds like they have been attempting to use their house yeast to achieve a result that was not ideal for this particular strain and were receiving inconsistent results.
Instead of fighting the house strains natural tendencies they have chosen to use a strain that performs as desired for their hoppy beers.
It would be like trying to train your Shih Tzu to be a duck dog... sure you may be able to get there, but it's a lot easier to just go out and buy a Retriever.

The state of ghost a year later. Crazy shite. The fact that I was able to walk in to a store that still has ghost for sale nearly 3 weeks after it was brewed is very telling
I felt the same way. I saw it at the register at Pearl Wine Company in NOLA last week with a sign saying what it was. Still just sitting there and people buying other beer and passing it up.

maybe because I know GR has one, I just assumed most serious breweries would have their own labs
kinda shocked Parish doesn't have one

Parish must not be a serious brewery.

I'll send you my last bottle. if I had more I'd seriously send it all to you.
The yeast issue helps to explain all the variation in the Envie batches that they started cranking out.

UH yeah this is pretty exciting
When i first had ghost it was the best beer I had ever had , and then in like the span of 4 months it morphed into something completely different.

Why did Net get banned for saying what the owners are now saying?

He was banned for trolling I would assume more than an opinion. Kept posting the same stupid picture and instigating.
Plus like other things, there is a way to type it and a way that will rub the wrong way. Saying, "ghost is a fricking disgusting product" vs "ghost doesn't meet the expectations" may mean the same but people view it differently.
But really the trolling..

I just hope we can all agree to refer to this span of time as Parish's yeast infection.

So larger breweries that put out MUCH LARGER QUANTITIES and many more varieties WEEKLY (TH, Trill, OH, Veil, ect.) Don't have this "yeast problem", because they have a lab to cultivate thier own or they pay someone to cultivate it, instead of reuse after X brews?

I would be curious how the heat and humidity affect the yeast and the beers in general vs what you see in the colder climates of the Northeast. I mean since we are being honest we are comparing why Ghost can't duplicate Ghost to breweries such as treehouse, alchemist, etc who seem to consistently put out similar tasting brews.

Spitballing some business ideas for them
They should sell Make Ghost Great Again hats
OR
give you one if you can prove you bought some beer during the yeast infection period.

I'm cool with a name for this period, but yeast infection doesn't work. Infection is a real thing with beer. That isn't what happened here, really.

Wort is purposely infected with yeast to create beer. This is more of a "yeast evolution". Evolution occurs more quickly in small organisms because of how many generations happen so quickly.

I guess Andrew is trolling himself when he wears a hat that says "make ghost great again"....
