Tin Roof makes the best Russian Imperial Stout I've ever had (Smilin' Ivan).
In no way is this meant to bash you or Tin Roof, but how many RIS' have you had?

Yep, but I like reading your thoughts.
Well, I try not to get into Tin Roof too much on here... but I really liked the Rusted Rye IPA, and I've heard a lot of good things so far about the Gose. I don't really care for the style, but people that do have been telling me that it's quite good.
And as far as fruit beers go, I think the Watermelon Wheat is on par with the Abita Blueberry Wheat.
I also really didn't care for Abita's barrel select Baltic Porter.

Gnarley Barley has improved greatly imo with their Korova, Peanut Butter, Big DIPA, etc...
Posted on 6/29/16 at 1:03 pm to tduecen
Agreed, I feel they should be second tier. And Tin Roof should possibly be 4th tier.

Tin Roof is not as bad as Covington and Flying Heart

Another topic, I wouldn't say we are at or near saturation yet, but the list grows monthly it seems.
Who if any on this list won't be here next year? My vote would be Covington.

I think Louisiana adds more, both Baton Rouge and New Orleans have the room for more craft breweries. Places like Lake Charles, Slidell, Covington, Bossier could all expand as well.
I don't think any fall off next year but in 3 years you will start seeing some turnover.

Just a reminder, taste is subjective, so take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt, and judge for yourself.
That being said,
IMO, the top tier are Parish, Great Raft and NOLA. Each bringing something different to the table.
Parish is bringing world class IPA's (Opus Vert), DIPA's (Ghost), and Pale Ale's (Envie).
Parish's Reve Coffee Stout is absolutelty outstanding, their grand reserve is excellent, and i am a fan of their imperial reserve (imperial stout). In my book, i find Parish to be #1 in quality.
NOLA is bringing some very good sours to the mix (Sauvage won silver at a national craft brewers competition and Lowerline is a good tart sour). Haven't had a non-sour/brett beer from them in a long time.
Great Raft is bringing excellent Brett (Oceans between us) and Sour beers (Come what mayhaw) and their other beers are solid as well. I'm really excited to try You, Me, and Everyone we know. I do find their beers with Mosaic hops are throwing off way too much green onion, and i'm wondering if other people are getting the same thing. Their previous batches of commotion and their DIPA were really well done. Maybe it's just my palate. I really like their Kolsch, and all my tomorrows was great the first time i had it, but like the others, i'm getting hints of green onion, but not as prevalent as commotion.
I find Abita deserves tons of respect for paving the way for the rest of the breweries in Louisiana and continuing shepherding along the newer breweries, however, i don't find any of their beers particularly exciting. Some of that is style preference, some of that is taste. I do have a blueberry wheat in my fridge to try, which i hear good things about.
Bayou Teche has a huge portfolio, but nothing really stands out. They are the epitome of brew whatever you want to brew, so i respect that. I've found Miel Sauvage and Saison D'ecrevice to be some decent offerings.
Covington is garbage.
Crescent city is meh.
Tin roof - Meh. I hear good things about the gose (bmoney), and others like smiling ivan (it's ok IMO), but i find they just don't deliver fully. The core beers of their initial lineup all tasted off last time i had them (about a year ago). Their juke joint i didn't care for. Parade ground is too thin for my tastes. And don't care for turnrow, but that may be more of a style thing with me. I'm still pulling for them to make something great, but haven't had anything yet from them that makes me want to buy more at the store.
Chafunkta - I had the Voo Ka Ray a few months back, and don't care for it. Too malty for my tastes.
Gnarly Barley - They are coming along. I need to try Korova again, so i will reserve judgement for that.
40 arpent - i had their pale ale, and i wasn't impressed.
The others i haven't had, but talking with others, here's some impressions i got.
I hear courtyard is making some good stuff.
Old rail and Second line, haven't heard enough about.
I hear mudbug's cafe au lait is very light in body for the style, reminiscent to tin roof's parade ground porters latest batch.
Southern Craft - I hear they are still getting to know their system, and i still need to try some, so i will reserve judgement.
Broken Wheel - I hear good things, and i've also heard they are average.
Chappapeela - I haven't really heard much about them. I was excited about their true to style farmhouse brewery, and was expecting some rave reviews on their beers, but haven't heard much. I've heard some say they are good, but nothing special. Would like to hear some more reviews on their beers.
Urban South - I hear they make a pretty decent IPA, and would like to get my hands on some.
Crying Eagle - brand new and not sure if they are distributing yet. Have a buddy who is friends with the owners, so next time i'm in lake chuck, maybe i can stop by the brewery and see it in action.
What are some other beers, specifically, that in your opinions, have a potential to get to the levels of parish, NOLA, or great raft?

I love their Holy Roller IPA.

Holy Roller was definitely better than I anticipated. It was a lot more than decent IMO.

1st Tier
- Parish - no explanation necessary
- Great Raft - no explanation necessary
2nd Tier
- NOLA - on the brink of 1st tier, but take away the Funk series and they are solid 2nd tier. Nothing in the usual lineup really excites me
- Courtyard - could be bumping up into 1st tier territory, I just haven't had enough of their stuff lately.
- Old Rail - everything from them is super solid.
- Gnarly Barley - 3 core beers are solid, and the special releases have been very good. Need a little more variety.
3rd Tier
- Bayou Teche - very few of their beers do I ever want a second one of. That's telling to me.
- 40 Arpent - see Bayou Teche
- Abita - too many resources available to make generally uninspired beers. The pleasant surprises (Big Easy IPA, Blueberry Wheat) are outweighed by the flops (Shotgun Double IPA, much of the Bourbon Street series).
- Chafunkta - I like the coffee porter and the Irish red is surprisingly good, but not something I go out of my way to get. The IPA isn't my style, and Kingfish is OK, but not my thing.
- Tin Roof - Quality isn't there, and consistency has been a problem. New CEO seems serious about turning them around. The new gose is really good, but $10 bombers of a gose was a questionable decision.
- Southern Craft - need to withhold judgement until they get their feet under them. Nothing I've had so far makes me want to have more though. The rye is OK.
- Mudbug - not a big fan of their portfolio
TBD - don't know much about these or haven't tried enough
- Urban South - enjoyed the first run of the IPA, but that's all I've had from them
- Second Line - only had one beer from them. It was a solid IPA. Need to try more to judge.
- Red River - haven't had anything from the new brewery
- Chappapeela Farms - holy $16 bombers, Batman!
- Broken Wheel - had a decent milk stout at a beer fest.
Pass
- Flying Heart - beer isn't good, branding is even worse
- Covington - how are they still around?
- Parish - no explanation necessary
- Great Raft - no explanation necessary

I said it yesterday on one of the other threads, that mediocre breweries can succeed as neighborhood bars. Even bad brewpubs brew some decent beer, and most of us would prefer it over BMC.
There are a lot of people that like BMC. There are also a lot of people who like microbrews, but don't care if it's world-class. They just want something that has some flavor to it. These people keep places like Covington open. They would rather go to the local brewpub and drink an OK craft beer, than drink a so-called world class beer that came from out of their neighborhood (or out of state).
The majority of breweries in Portland are mediocre. There are a lot of good ones, but I think that's a numbers game. If you were to put all of the Portland breweries into tiers, the ratio might be about the same as what most of you are posting here. We may be a little quicker to weed out the horrible brweries, but we make up for it by having some really niche breweries that brew only gluten free beers or only beers with no hops, or vegetable beers only, and shite like that.

Contract brewing?
And like Jax said, they probably get plenty of local support from people that aren't as discerning.

They need to find a brewer who's more interested in brewing beer than playing bass in Cowboy Mouth.

New CEO? That's positive news if it means they go in the right direction. Is this new head someone with beer industry experience?

I was under the impression they were making sour and funk beers, is this the case, or were these sach saison strains?
