New CEO? That's positive news if it means they go in the right direction. Is this new head someone with beer industry experience?
Not brand new, but recent... and yes plenty of industry experience.

are there any breweries that only brew gruits in Portland? I have on fermenting right now and I was wondering how some hipster brewery hadn't started this

April 1st was her first day. She's got a lot of industry experience.

I was under the impression they were making sour and funk beers, is this the case, or were these sach saison strains?
Grab a bottle of the porter and tell me how much funk you get from it. Both the porter and saison are available at Robert on Highland.

There is a brewery in the midwest i believe, that brews with only things found in the woods surrounding the brewery. It's called scratch brewing. I don't believe they use hops, but use stuff like tree leaves, or other things to get bitterness. It's basically an almost 100% foraged brewery. It's interesting, however i question how drinkable some of the stuff is.

Probably around 8-12.
I've tried some of the big boys like Old Rasputin and Stone, but I like Tin Roof's because it's not bitter.

Oh, and i know it comes as a big surprise, but Tin Roof's beer with LSU will be a "Premium American lager".
And they are going to make a killing off of it.

Premium American lage
Is that like an imperial lager?

No doubt. I can only hope they are going for a Czech or German pilsner type. Maybe they could just clone Firestone Walker's Pivo Pils?

The test batch was really good. It was my #2 ranked beer of the 8. Would be a crushable tailgate beer. Nice lemony aroma and a clean finish. Won't appeal to the mavens here though.

Yes. Highland and Kennilworth. Formerly known as Matherne's.

They are going for the BJCP guidelines for American Lager... 1B on your scorecard. Although without the adjuncts that are typically associated with the style, hence the "premium" label.

When did they change names?

When Robert bought them back in February or March.

Covington - how are they still around?
One reason and only on reason- they brew there strawberry ale year round. I didn't say it was a good reason that it keeps them a float.

I don't know any that do this exclusively, but Buckman Botanical Brewery does all fruit and vegetable beers. I believe several breweries in town have brewed gruits, maybe even more than a few.

I didn't think you could get a couple of those outside of LA, so how exactly are they representing LA well in the National Beer Scene? At least Abita has wide distribution around the Southeast.
