Crown Reserve/Cask16/XR is something that most people like.
I'm currently in love with Bulleit. On par with Reserve to me, and at $19.98 for a 1/5th it's a helluva deal.
ETA: I realize that I'm going to get laughed at by serious drinkers with these suggestions, but I think they're tasty.

If you're willing to spend in the 70-80 dollar range, Glenmorangie Artein is a great way to go. Had some recently and it was terrific stuff.
Like someone else said, if you want to go with scotch, you should probably avoid the Islay stuff and stick with the Highlands, since Islays only appeal to some scotch drinkers.

Go to Cuban Liquor on Perkins and ask them to recommend something. They have several nice bottles that would make a good gift.
