Gordon Ramsey thinks Cajun food looks like a mess on a plate so this isn't legit.

Can believe they visited Randols, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's a tourist trap for the ages.

Randol's will never see another dollar from me, nor will i EVER attempt to eat there again. Why? My prego wife, I and her mother went to Randol's for dinner one Mardi Gras evening. There was only ONE other table with customers in the place. Wife and her mom ordered crabs, i had raw oysters. After drinking a beer while waiting on the raw oysters(and i'm not a beer guzzler), i asked the waiter how much longer would it be before the crabs would be out. He laughed, said he had no idea. My mother in law knows the Randols personally. She asked the waiter to have Frank come talk to her. His reply was he wasn't there, when my mother in law just saw in the kitchen seconds earlier. Well, the crabs were cold, the oysters weren't very good and the beer was hot. Being a former waiter myself, i can honestly say that its the ONLY time i have stiffed a waiter, not matter how bad the service was, but this was over the top. I also informed him to tell Frank that i will forever tell everyone i know that his resturant sucks, hence my comment on Randols' Tourist Trap Restaurant.

If you couldn't find good food, you were probably looking in the wrong places. How could you not like:

Italian Market, Cafe Vermilionville, French Press, Johnson's, Charley G's, Jolies, Agave, Pamplona, Cafe Habana, Pop's Black Pot, Ruby's, Creole Lunch House?

Lived in Laffy for awhile, and frankly was surprised it received the award. While I had good meals at Cafe V, Charlie G's and Pamplona, they were very inconsistent - probably due to a high turnover in chefs. What Laffy does have is a large number of very good "plate lunch" type of restaurants: Dwight's, Creole Lunch House, Ruby's,etc. Last I heard, Pop's closed about 2 weeks ago. But, hats off t the city. Should do it some good with luring tourists.

I thought they have had the same chef for a couple of years now. I know their pastry chef has been there for a couple of years

Might be - I've been out of Laffy for about 4 years. When I was there, they went through chefs at a pretty steady pace.

I never went to pamplona under the original chef, but I heard it went downhill when he left. However, about a year ago they turned it around by doing an overhaul on the menu and lowering the prices.

Original chef was also the owner. Ate there several times when he was still around and it was very good - ate there once after he left and it left a bad taste in my mouth (literally). Hope it found a way to resurrect itself - was a neat space for a restaurant.

Chris's downfall was leaving this place imo.

I was born and raised in Lafayette and have probably lived over half my life there, on and off over 42 years, so yeah, I think I know where to look. Most of those places on your list are good to okay, none are great. As another poster pointed out, one problem is inconsistency. I've had some very good meals at Pamplona, and I've had some that were shockingly amateurish. That experience has been repeated at most of the white table cloth places in Lafayette. My biggest gripes with restaurants in Lafayette are that they're lazy, do things half assed, and there isn't a lot of variation in the menus. Plate lunches are a strong area for Lafayette. My point is that there are some good places, no great places, but I don't think the place qualifies as some kind of food mecca. Many homers tout Lafayette as the kind of place where you have to look hard to find bad food, and I think it's just the opposite.

You said it sucked, now you agree with me that they have good food, just not great food. I agree they really lack in the fine dining dept.

You are right about plate lunches. That is what I miss most, that and decent bbq. I don't eat out for dinner enough for fine dining choices to matter. What I do eat alot of is lunch and good food at decent prices which lafayette def has.

Can you name five restaurants you personally consider to be great? They do not need to all be in the same city. What are the best meals you get from these places?

I'd just like to know what meets your threshold of "great."

He has probably eaten at more great restaurants than any poster on this board.
