Only a slight exaggeration . . . maybe. There are definitely too many alternatives to waiting a long time for a table in a place. To do so, that place has to be truly extraordinary. I mean 45 minutes or an hour is absurd.

I know they never took reservations before but their website says that you have to have reservations with a party of 5 or more??? maybe they changed it?

I think that's still the case. I was just making the point that why would VOR wait more than 15 minutes for good food when he can have a reservation at any number of places in town and walk right in at his time and sit down.

Agreed. Better options than Jacque-Imo's would be:
1) spend less money for basically the same mediocre food @ Joey K's
2) spend the same amount of money for the same style of food done better at Clancy's or Upperline

no for real, in a city with so many great restaurants - both upscale and casual and everywhere in between (many that take reservations) - the idea of standing for 30 minutes or an hour waiting for a table is mind boggling to me.

It's a young, culinarily unsophisticated scene--TU and Loyola undergrads (and returning alums & their out of town families) who are enamored of the funky vibe, don't mind the long wait and getting half plastered before dinner...food is borderline at best. Service is a joke, and the whole place is filthy. Schlock is the word that comes to mind.
Do yourself a favor and go around the corner to Brigtsen's, Dante's Kitchen, or up Carrollton to Boucherie. All are superior, both in service/style and what's on the plate. Hell, I'd take Cowbell any day over JIs. If you really like the food, as someone mentioned upthread, go to Crabby Jack's and save your dining bux for a real restaurant.

When I have people in town, they always want to go there because they heard about it on TV. I try to steer them elsewhere, but if they really want to go, I don't mind. Its passable stuff and it can be a cool atmosphere.
But there are many other places significantly better for the same price with reservations.
Its a filthy, average restaurant that tourists think is "New Orleans-y".

same exact thing with Ben's Chili Bowl in D.C. place gets good marks on Yelp and Urbanspoon, it's always packed, the Food Network loves the place .. but the actual product is, in reality, pretty shitty.
I don't put too much stock into reviews and ratings on places like Ben's or Jacque's. Too many morons who don't know anything about food weighing in.

Its a tourist trap that is actually pretty good, and tourists love it, partially because they EXPECT New Orleans places to be like that: Loud, Dirty, Grungy, with extremely heavy and fattening food.
That's part of the reason it irks me a little bit. But, I've always had a good time there. Its not like its Oceana or some shite hole like that.
