Btw you are right of course when it comes to cubic inch bc obviously that's volume. But to say the weight is different is not really correct

I just did a search on 'ideal weight' charts and found about a dozen that all had different scales. I'm 5-7 (used to be 5-8 but lost an inch with age). I weigh 151. On some charts I was on the low end of ideal. On other charts I was a fatty.

come on

BMI admits that it does not take into account muscle mass, but for the vast majority of the population, it is a good barometer

I promise you, most overweight people are not near as muscular as they think they are

Any exercise physiologist would say the same thing.

Gosh, so true. You can also be quite fit (from a strength standpoint) and still be quite fat. Look at all of those morbidly obese NFL linemen. Are you gonna say that they're healthy? No, they're grossly fat because mass matters to their job performance.

If you have next to no muscle, maybe. My little brother has a 6 pack and weighs 150 lbs, and his BMI is overweight. My BMI says I'm obese, and I wear size 34 pants and large shirts. It's a useless number.

You're essentially saying paperclips weigh the same as bricks because a pound of paper clips weighs the same as a pound of brinks.

They'd say muscle is more dense than fat, absolutely.

No one is saying those guys aren't obese though. According to BMI, Steve Smith is almost obese. That's ridiculous.

like I said, most people overestimate the amount of muscle they actually have

and I don't want to, but if you force me, I'll post a shirtless picture of me when I was 6'2" and 170 and show you that you can have muscle and still be "normal" when it comes to BMI

Been needing to drop about 20...

How'd you lose 41?

And yeah went to Dr. recently for well visit and was told I was nearly obese.. an tough that was odd b/c the target weight range he'd like to see me at was around 160-165.. There no way...I'd look like a crack addict

its just a screening tool

from the CDC

quote:

A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual.
To determine if a high BMI is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings10.

if you're not obese, then don't get so worked up over having a high BMI

I mean literally next to no muscle.

That is insanely lean, and I'd imagine you'd admit that.

You criticize food, I'll criticize this shitty "tool."
