People definitely overestimate the amount of muscle they have and underestimate how much weight they need to lose especially the amount of weight they would need to lose to be ripped/have a sixpack.

how else are you going to gauge large populations? its a quick screening tool used to gauge the health of large populations

are there outliers that frick it up? of course, but for the average person, its works just fine, whether they want to admit it or not

Thank you. I'm really pleased.

Weight watchers online for men. Taken about 6 months. Slow and steady.

the target weight range he'd like to see me at was around 160-165

I'm going to go for 165. At 174 I look pretty good for my age, but I don't look skinny. Just speaking for me, it's surprising how much fat I probably wouldn't admit I had.
People are shocked and say "you didn't look fat to me."

I'd need to lose at least 10 lbs, maybe 12-15 to be ripped. As of now, I have defined pec lines, obliques clearly visibly, 5.5 of the six pack and very lean I'm fairly vascular in my arms, hips and legs. 210 would be a good weight for me to look ripped.

Why do it if it's ineffective?

What good is it's quickness if it's ineffective?

I disagree that it is effective for the average person.

well then I'm going to stop arguing then because we won't get anywhere

I think are overestimating the fat to muscle ratio of the average person

It is. There are so many examples that show it as such.

Sorry that a test calling people in good shape overweight or obese is shitty. At 5'10", BMI says the highest weight you can be is 173 without being overweight. That's poppycock. Further, it says 130 lbs is normal. That's even worse.

again

we are talking averages here

if a person regularly goes to the gym, BMI is not going to be a good indicator of that persons health

but the average person does not regularly go to the gym

The average 5'10" guy at 130 is not healthy or normal.

Ah.. Good to know..

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah..I found I pic of me from college , boy that was depressing.. Granted I did spend a few semesters with an S&C coach soo.. me at 185 back then was really lean looking..

I've been trying to drop weight b/c I just don't feel good and starting to have knee and back issues and i'm sure that's has to do with my extra weight even though I don't look overly fat

eh...5'10" 130 is probably healthy...again too many variables

normal? probably not in an adult male in the US, no

but I don't think BMI is using "normal" like you are using normal

plus I think BMI is mostly used to screen severe obesity, which it increases in accuracy the higher the BMI numbers, which makes sense, there are obviously more fat people than really lean, strong athletes

quote:

The accuracy of BMI as an indicator of body fatness also appears to be higher in persons with higher levels of BMI and body fatness16.

I cant agree with this. We had a 5'10" 145lb guy on our team at LSU who had some muscle that was ridiculously skinny. At 130 he would have been sick, like aids sick. I am sorry but I think the BMI charts are completely useless.

You're right, we may as well stop talking. There is no reason for a 5'10" male to way 130 lbs. Not in this country.

normal? probably not in an adult male in the US, no

See above. I don't care that 130 lbs may be obese in Africa.

quote:

Normal (healthy weight)
Is there another way I should be taking it?

There really is no point in continuing this. I thin you're arguing this just to argue with me.

everyone that think it is useless is probably in the overweight or obese range and it probably a regular at the gym so they get pissed off when something says they are overweight

BMI isn't for you, it acknowledges that it isn't for you, so stop being so insecure about it

if someone could come up with a more efficient and simpler way to screen large populations on weight, you should go ahead and do it because you could copyright that and make some money

this is kind of an indictment on how accustomed to fat we have become in this country, no?
