I want to grill a pineapple but these things look green. I have about 8 minutes left of shopping. I'll check back. Tia

if you pull the "center" leaf that's connected to the pineapple on the top, and it comes out easy, it's ripe.

Pineapples don't really ripen after being picked. As long as it looks healthy (leaves and husk), it's fine.

The leaf trick is totally cool, and yes, it always works. An old guy once told me in the grocery, he had spent a lot of time in the South Pacific.

I usually give a press on the bottom and if it's soft and not rock hard, it's usually good to go. I'll try the leaf test next time.

I ended up bailing on the fresh pineapple. Went with Del Monte slices for my Jamaican/ Miss Delta fusion fire grilled jerk chicken thigh pineapple and roasted red pepper, jalapeño and sweet onion conglomerate. It was well received.

My experience is that you should never shop for an avocado or pineapple the day you need one. If they know you are in a bind, they are never ripe.
