We are headed to houston for a few days and i want good mexican and good bbq. Any recommendations? Anywhere in the city is ok as we will be in different places on different days.

Also, any hole in the walls that I should make myself aware of?

I did a thread on this a few years back, the BBQ place they sent me was pretty decent. It was on the southeast side of the city if I recall right. I never did have Mexican that I really enjoyed. Just average stuff.

Killen's in Pearland was the BBQ.

The two above are your best options for BBQ. Pit room is close to Montrose/Med Center, and Killens is 15 miles south of that in the burbs (Pearland).

I prefer El Tiempo for texmex, and Hugos for Mexican.

El Tiempo Cantina

The best Tex Mex in Houston.

Lupe Tortilla a distant second.

The best Mexican food in Houston is Hugo's. Picos is also very good.

I haven't been to many places in houston to eat.

I enjoy Gatlins for BBQ and either Lupe or TacoAGoGo for Mexican

Corkscrew in The Woodlands for BBQ and El Tiempo or Papasitos For Texmex.

Also hit up Torchy's for some tacos and phenomenal queso.

Hugo's and caracol are two of my favorite restaurants in Houston.

I have been going here since it was off Bellaire. It use to my parents go to. The key is to order the mole's, soft shell crab or Pork/lamp shank type of dishes and not the more tex-mex type.

Hugo's, although not Tex-Mex, was really good the last time I was there. It serves more interior or regional Mexican cuisine.

I just left Houston and ate at both Ninfas on Navigation and El Tiempo and they were both excellent. They were next door to each other.

I could eat that skirt steak they serve at both places 7 days a week. I had something odd called sweetbread at El Tiempo and it was good too. I think it was grilled pancreas or something like that. Not sure I want to know what it was but still the same it was good. Some guy at the table next to me at Ninfas ordered some kind of shrimp dish and it looked outstanding. My boss ordered ribs of all things at Ninfas and they were very good also.
