It's definitely Africa hot out here, but that didn't stop me from doing my first double batch brew day. Started late, around 3, with a single hop (centennial) IPA, now on to an Irish Red. The rain earlier definitely didn't help with the nasty humidity/heat.
Not sure if you can tell from the pic but this is RED! This is coming out of my HERMS coil, I can only imagine that it'll deepen in color after the boil.

I can't remember if I've asked you or not, but did you build that control panel? Is that a 30A or 50A setup?
Africa hot indeed, but at least it's not next to 2-3 propane burners.

I don't know if it's sad or if I just have an obsession with brewing, but I dreamed last night that I had an automated homebrew setup like you have. It was awesome.

I did build the panel, got most of the parts from eBay and Amazon. it's a 30 amp panel.
I've definitely had a brew related dream or two also

I think this is the last time I brew in the summer unless I can small batch on the stove. This sucks.
With such a small grain bill I decided to go with no-sparge. I missed my mash temp by 3 degrees but it's still plenty high enough.

Next time, brew in the carport.

Had my first run in with ropey beer. I opened up my sour fermentation chamber (aka guest shower curtain) and saw one of my beers looked funny. It was a lot cloudier than before I had left town a few days ago. I grabbed a sample with the thief and when I went to pour it out, it just came out in like this blob. I tried to get a picture of it, but it was hard to capture how it stick to things and forms snot-like streams. I figured I had to taste it, for science of course. After I got over the texture, it tasted just like a regular aging sour. Not sure why I expected it to taste any different.
BTW, Bmoney, I think I saw you running down the road when we were leaving town today. Beast mode in that heat.

That's kinda cool. From what I hear they will mature out of that stage.
My table beer is fermenting away happily this morning. So that's kinda nice.

I listened to this happening on the Sour Hour on a couple episodes. What causes that? I'm sure you know better than i do, but if i remember correctly, I think it corrects itself out if you just let it sit longer? Or is there other measures you must do.
I specifically remember someone calling in about this but can't remember Jay's suggestions other than let it sit.

Pedio causes it and Brett will tear right back through it given enough time.

Do you have to pitch another vial of brett, or do you just let it sit and wait?
Posted on 7/20/15 at 8:09 am to BugAC
There is already enough brett in the beer to do it, you just have to wait it out.

Pedio. It got ropey after 12-14 days in primary. After asking around and doing some reading, it looks like I had a healthy pitch of pedio in my starter and it it grew quickly with all the available sugars. I had incorrectly assumed it usually happens at a later age, but apparently it can happen quickly if you pitch enough pedio.

I built up some crooked stave batch 50 dregs and didn't realized it had pedio, this is a perfect description.
Not thinking, I threw it out and totally regret it now.

I wonder if all Crooked Stave has pedio? I kinda hope so, I used several Crooked Stave beers in my dreg collection. I think it would be cool to see the beer I just pitched those dregs into turn ropey

I think it all depends on which beers you used. A lot are 'clean' of souring bacteria, but some of the WWB and petite sour series beers have other bacteria besides brett in there.
Batch 50 was obviously sour, but also had '100% brett...' on the bottle so I was like what they hell lets see what happens.

I'm pretty sure the dregs I used from rds' homebrews have some origin with Crooked Stave and there certainly seem to have some bacteria in them since they are sour.
The three CS beers I used the dregs off of are Nightmare on Brett, St Bretta, and Vielle

Definitely wasn't me. I can't run at all right now. In fact, had an MRI on my knee this morning, and I'm waiting to hear what the orthopedist has to say.

Brewed tonight for the first time in 2 1/2 months. Peach wheat in the fermentor, and everything is cleaned up (including me) by 10:30. Weeknight brew days are the only way to do it if you ask me.
