Half Shell Oyster House will be coming to the Costco shopping center in Lafayette. I see that it started in Gulfport and is currently in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Any opinions, F&DB? I am wishfully hoping it is good because that would be nice and convenient for me.

How hard can it be to screw up an oyster on the half shell?

I had some charbroiled with a tasso and breadcrumb topping that overwhelmed the oyster. That's one way.

My thinking is this. You order a $50 steak, why put crawfish, crab, zucchini, beets, nasty arse cole slaw, etc, etc on top of it.

Same with an oyster. You get one of the finest tasting things in life, but then you put all this other crap on top of it.

I like the basics...

That's certainly one way to approach it.

But some us might only want a little bit of oyster to go with our breadcrumb and Tasso.

ETA: count, I am in full agreement with you on how steaks should be served.

Im thinking just the chewy part of the oyster, only.

I like it. We go to the one in Biloxi down the street from Mary Mahoney's.

Never was a big fan of them raw, but have always liked them fried, like on a poboy.

This chargrilled style I do like, and don't mind if the oysters get overwhelmed. This is just one of those things that I'm not a purist about.

Appreciate you giving us the heads up on this new place.

I guess Drago's is a no-go.....?

I've been to the Gulfport location a few times, never been impressed with anything that came to the table. It's the first time I noticed that places shuck 20 or so dozen and stack them in a fridge waiting for people to order them. I've noticed it at other places, so I'm not going to act like its unusual.

Never really got the concept since it looks New Orleansy inside but doesn't really seem to focus on it any other way. None of the food was remarkable one way or the other.

I hear the Biloxi location is better, but to be honest I think people's tastes just get easier to please in that direction. I wouldn't leave BSL to go a Half Shell.

ETA: It's been a while since we ate anything but Japanese/Vietnamese/Thai when in the Biloxi/Gulfport/Ocean Springs area. I can find Half Shell type food where I'm at, the others not so much.

I haven't heard anything about Drago's since the news that the first deal fell through. At that time, the owner seemed hopeful that another location was possible, but the silence seems to prove otherwise.

I ate at the Metairie location back in January right after the Parc Lafayette deal fell through, and asked the staff about what their plans were. They didn't seem to know anything about a plan B, and I got the vibe that they probably weren't going to pursue coming here any further.

ETA: all this talk is giving me an envie for Don's.

The one in Biloxi is pretty good the few times I ate there. Price wise, I'd go again before I went back to Mary Mahoney's.

Love the one here a little pricy but to be honest their oyster Orleans were some of the best I've had at a restaurant.

all of that guys food is avg at best... I went to the first one and wasn't impressed then. shite all of his restaurant's food taste the same... Bunch of Sysco shite and him putting lump crab on the menu and its sheepshead at best.

Never understood the praise for the place. Much better food out there on the coast for the same price point. He will shite the bed in laffy.

Apparently pretty easy. Ever had them from Don's Hut? Do yourself a favor and don't....

There is nothing better IMO than a chargrilled oyster with a little garlic butter on it. Simple, delicious and difficult to screw up but lots of places seem to do so by overthinking it.
